Hey Now..............HEY NOW

Well i just got done commenting on jbd128's entry and I agree with a lot of his feelings. As much as I love the guitar, there have been times a lot lately where I just haven't been drawn to it as much, or I find myself hitting walls constantly. I'm hoping its just a phase, but in reality its a sure sign that I have to move in a different direction. Fortunately I'm in a position now where I can afford to take lessons again and pick up with the jazz I never really got close to mastering...(i can comp a cliche pattern here or there...something that'll knock your grandma (and her friends) out of their wheelchairs when they hear some Jerome Kern 1940's swing) But to truly be able to improvise, play around with the rhythm...function in an ensemble, takes a lot of work.

There is also the option of playing live in a band. Again, the obstacle would be whether to play original stuff or covers, I've done the cover stuff before, so its not the most enticing option, but playing out is still a ton of fun. I think that if I could find people who'd want to do challenging covers, like Rush, Pink Floyd, Zeppelin...then it'd be fun, but, dammit, I refuse to do anything considered trendy or popular, and thats where that idea starts to hit the wall.

Ah...the best band in my opinion right now is definitely Porcupine Tree. They do everything a good rock band should do...and that is write creative songs, utilize instruments tastefully, incite a thought process with the song...all while wanting to just rock (not in the Dee Snyder way). I have to admit, the stuff they play holds up a lot better IMO than some of the other prog/experimental rock I've listened to. Things just feel good with them, never rushed, never out of sorts, always appropriate. I really admire S. Wilson's ear for music. Just coming off the show at the Keswick has re-enforced all these qualities of the band.

So now the question...I've been putting off getting together a small personal studio for a while now, but I think I should just go with it. As I said before, the opportunities are there right now, to do some of the things I've been wanting for a while. So why not...
