So I finally got my hands on the AAF's glass bead making kit. It basically consists of a gas burner, glass rods of various colours and styles, and mandrils to wrap the glass onto, plus several useful tools.

So today I was productive and made a variety of strangely shaped bits of coloured glass, with holes in them:
