    Arthur's Bane - Part One

I can't believe another year has drifted away, but here we are once again at the beginning of another season of Merlin. The first ever episode was aired on my first day at university, seems like ages ago! Anyway, I'm drifting off the point...

My first observation has got to be that this is one of the most Merthur packed episodes we've ever had! It's no secret that I am not a fan of Gwen (which is why I often call her Guinevere... I'm petty like that), so I was very pleased that they left her in the castle so that Merlin and Arthur could ride off somewhere together. But the number of scenes where Merlin and Arthur had intimate conversations (with music that has got to be some sort of love theme, right?) boggled the mind.

But the writers didn't stop there, oh no; they decided to give us not one, but two scenes where Merlin and Arthur were sleeping together! The second scene was pure gold; Arthur sleeping with his arm resting possessively on Merlin's shoulder. I couldn't wipe the smile off my face for ages!

Did the writers stop there? Nope, next they gave us Merlin and Arthur together in a net; pressed up against each other (kneeing each other where they shouldn't before the watershed!), and sexily bouncing up and down. I have no words. Only, perhaps, THANK YOU!

Let's all hope and pray that this level of Merthur continues for the rest of the season. If they get us Merthur fans back on board (and let's face it, we are HUGE in number, because everybody can see Merthur!), perhaps they'll come back for another season yet.

In other news... Gwaine and Percival are stuck half-naked in a cheaper and more stony version of the White Witch's castle from Narnia; complete with somewhat intelligent wolves. One of them has to be called Maugrim. Morgana tries to cover the fact that she's trying to turn into the White Witch by wearing very similar clothing, only coloured black, so that she can convincingly say: "I'm not the White Witch; would she wear black?"

Speaking of borrowing from other franchises - we had a couple of LOTR moments; especially when Arthur's rather small army plodded along through a gorge. I was waiting for the shout of "Wargs! We're under attack!" Come to think of it, actually, Morgana's new home bears a slight resemblance to Isengard. So now she's a cross between Saruman and the White Witch... which would make her actually quite scary if it were true.

But now the bizarre bit... Merlin appears to have borrowed from Stargate, not just the usual allusions to LOTR and Narnia. Gwaine, knocked unconscious by a cheap-looking Saxon (not sure why he's in the north; they invaded the south, you know! And, as we established in series 1, we already have a kingdom called Mercia; Saxons shouldn't be something new, should they?), is 'saved' by something that has surely got to be an alien. It's not a 'creature of magic', it's clearly an alien! And borrowed from Stargate. Look at these:

Do you see a resemblance? If you made the Sekkari from SGA (on the right) look more fleshy, and less metallic, they could almost be brothers.

SPOILER ALERT (I think); the Merlin wiki (is that reliable?) says that this 'creature'/alien has the 'great burden - the gift of all-knowledge'. Actually, that would not only make it a god, but would also contradict McKay; who said the Sekkari were advanced but not omniscient... perhaps I'm taking this too far. But I can't help it! I love Stargate, and I love Merlin; how can I resist when they seem to overlap?!?!?!

Actually, had a thought, if you crossed these two:

You might get very close indeed to the 'creature'/alien hiding under Morgana's castle. In any case, Morgana, if it is an alien you should be aware that it probably has cloaking technology; and as you can't even invent an engine for your sled-thing, you probably won't be able to find a way around it!

I'm going to stop now, I'm getting for too nerdy.

But before I go, one more THANK YOU to the writers for LOADS AND LOADS of Merthur!!!!!!! Keep it up :-)

review, ramblings
