"Don't trust that man," Mordred whispers when Lancelot has gone. His hands are tight and urgent on Gareth's shoulders. "Hear me, brother? he will betray thee."
"He would not!"
"He cares nothing for thee, except his own pride. Gareth, Gareth-- list to thy brother, fair one--" He embraces him, trembling, one hand on his hair, and Gareth yields. Since childhood he's known safety in Mordred's arms, and comfort. He looks up, offering a kiss of forgiveness, allowing another. Gentle fingers brush his neck.
It's only later, when he knows clearly what he's done, that he realizes in horror: Mordred lies.
