Summary: Percy offers comfort, but it isn't understood.
So Percy goes back to living alone, because with work to do and things to plant it isn't really living alone; and if Mordred stops, just once, because of some sick twisted desire to know whether everyone's heard about him, everyone hates him, everyone's going to fight him--if Mordred comes, that's just having a bit more company. Percy's happy. He's got someone to help him in the garden, where a man is just a man with dirt under his fingernails, and the cucumber seeds don't care who tucks them into their warm hills.
But Mordred just doesn't get it, and he can't stand it when Percy takes his hands and shows him how to press dirt around a baby pepper plant. There's no good reason, since Percy should have heard about him, should hate him, should try to fight him--and that's why he has to leave.
Even though part of him wants to see how the cucumbers he planted come up. Even though he wants to know just how hot the peppers were, the ones Percy promised felt like they were burning a hole through your tongue.
