There's no questioning that the Queen has a lover, and it takes little enough observation to mark Lancelot as the one. They speak of it among themselves, but no one says anything firmly, no one brings the matter to the King's attention--knowing, as they do, that either he doesn't know, and it's better that way, or, more likely, he does, and out of love for both his wife and the friend he loves like a brother he's turning his face away.

Sometimes Lynet turns to him in bed and kisses him, and Gaheris smells Mordred's familiar scent in her hair and on her skin; he tastes his brother on her lips. He knows that some of the cuts on Mordred's face and shoulders are from her teeth and nails; he knows that Mordred makes no such mark on her, though sometimes he hears her cry out in their room when he comes back too early; and then he goes outside again and walks in the woods until time enough has passed.

No one whispers about him.

He thinks the King does know.
