When Maya Fey first heard of Ema Skye, she was jealous. Who was this other girl to have come in and been Nick’s assistant? That was her thing. That was what made her special! This random other girl with some sister who was a murderer and stuff (even if she technically wasn’t) couldn’t just come in and take what made her special! If she wasn’t Nick’s assistant, then what would she be?

…So she would also be the future Master of the Kurain Channeling Technique, but… whatever! That totally wasn’t the point!

When Ema Skye first met Maya Fey, she was absolutely dumbfounded. This girl was the antithesis of science! She vaguely supposed that they could test how channeling works and stuff, but it was such an unscientific field… she had no idea how Mr. Wright could possibly have worked with this girl. How did they get anything done? Well. She simply decided that she would have to make up for it when she came back from Europe and became a scientific investigator- then she would give him evidence and help him conduct investigations that he could really use!

Sure, this girl was interesting and her spirit channelings helped Mr. Wright and all… but you can’t get anything really done without science!

When Maya Fey first talked to Ema Skye, she became slightly more intrigued. She was a considerably worldlier woman by that point - not cynical - but she recognized that luck and her ability to communicate with the dead didn’t always lead to a happy ending. After all, she hadn’t been able to stop Nick from getting disbarred. What kind of an assistant was she? But maybe this woman, with her science and her facts and her ability to make everyone in the surrounding area pay attention with her big words, would be able to help. Or at least help her make sense of everything.

Besides, the way her hair fell down, over her shoulders, around her lab coat and bag full of chemical-y stuff… Maya had never seen anything quite like it. It was beautiful. At the very least, she had to find out her secret.

When Ema Skye first went out to lunch with Maya Fey, she was confused by the girl. Again. The girl was random, insane, crazy… and any other synonyms one could think of for that. She was cheerful, even with her tragic past. She was bouncy, even though she understood how the world worked. She had to be one of the strangest people she had ever met. And she was fascinating. What a study she could make! Obviously, it wouldn’t be something that she could publish in a scientific journal or anything of the sort, but just for herself. To… find out if there was any way to predict how this girl would react. Yeah, that worked as a valid study.

…That was what she told herself, anyway. That a study was the reason she wanted to spend so much time with Maya Fey. It was the only reason that made scientific sense, after all, wasn’t it? It clearly had nothing to do with how much she loved the way Maya’s eyes sparkled as she talked about the Steel Samurai.

When Maya Fey first kissed Ema Skye, she was absolutely convinced that something very strange had happened with a channeling. Or something. That wasn’t her taking control for once, after all. Some other spirit must have come into her body when she wasn’t paying attention and taken advantage of that moment while they were both huddled under a single umbrella at a crosswalk. Some spirit that was obviously a total pervert, and wanted to use her to take advantage of the both of them. The only problem with this theory was that… Maya was totally conscious during the kiss. And she didn’t understand how. Wasn’t she supposed to lose consciousness during a channeling? So why did she know exactly what was going on?

And how, exactly, did it make her so happy when she realized that Ema had kissed her back?

This wasn’t the first time Ema or Maya did anything, now. It was just a regular day, where nothing special happened. But this phenomenon, which used to annoy the both of them so much wasn’t a problem anymore. They both may always have preferred to have something to do, but with the other, their lives were far from boring.

And besides, Ema was still conducting her study. And Maya still didn’t know how Ema’s hair was so straight and shiny and pretty. So it wasn’t like they had nothing to do.
