Author's Notes: Oh god, I really am getting back into writing fanfic. I haven't done it in a while, so I'm kind of really rusty at it, and this isn't the best fic I've ever written, but... here it is. It may also have something to do with the fact that I don't particularly love Phoenix/Iris, and thus am not amazing at writing them, but... I dunno. Whateves. Anyway, this is for you, yamikinoko! Sorry I took so long about it, and I hope you enjoy it~
To Iris Hawthorne, her sister Dahlia was like the sun. Beautiful, shining, and everything seemed to be happy to revolve around her. And in return, Dahlia seemed to light up everything around her in the most beautiful way.
Iris in turn was like the garden who benefits and grows from the sun's energy. Beautiful, and constantly given admiration. But also always walked upon without a single thought.
Iris also mattered to Dahlia just about as much as a garden matters to the sun. It may be pretty, but there are plenty of others just like it out there. And in the end, it doesn't really matter to the sun in the slightest. Even if the garden needs the sun to survive, the sun wouldn't notice the presence or absence of the garden.
But Iris didn't really care about that. Just so long as her sister was there, she was happy. Even if she knew that Dahlia didn't really care about her, she was still alright, just benefitting from her existence, and wishing she could help her life be easier more than she already was.
When she first met Phoenix Wright though, everything changed. And yet, nothing changed at all. Dahlia was still the sun, shining down on Iris with her energy, and Iris was still the garden that was part of the earth that surrounded her. But something new was there- a tree in the center of her garden. A tree which made the beauty of her garden complete. He shielded her from the mercilessness of the sun beating down on her, and she gave him nutrients from her soil. They needed each other, but they were happy to be together. They fit together, and anyone who looked at them couldn't imagine one without the other.
And as the years went by, and Phoenix saved Iris from her sister on multiple occasions, and in more ways than she ever could have imagined, Iris began to realize that some of the most beautiful plants are the ones that thrive in the shade.
