We have four job postings, as well as an on-going need for relief staff (on-call). The pay begins at $18.95/hr and if you're relief staff (as I am), you can often work 20 - 35 hours/week if you want it.

Positions: Community Worker, Shelter, Temporary Casual on-going.
Salary Range: Grid 10, $18.95 per hour
* If you're a relief worker, they pay you 10.2% more in lieu of benefits. This works out to $20.88/hr.

Job Summary: Reporting to the Shelter Manager, the Community Worker provides a range of support services to mental health consumers and/or substance users faced with homelessness and in need of temporary emergency housing. Working closely with members of the Shelter team, The CW assesses incoming referrals to the Shelter and provides management services. These services include: appropriate referrals to ongoing community supports, advocating on the client’s behalf in an effort to gain access to appropriate assistance and generally educating and supporting residents who are dealing with complex bio-psycho-social issues. The CW role includes medication administration to Triage clients and assistance with basic First Aid. The CW is also responsible for the general daily operations of the Shelter including light housekeeping, distribution of health/hygiene products and maintaining a safe and secure environment for staff and residents.

Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience:
- Graduate of Grade 12.
- Current First Aid & CPR certification.
* If you're hired, they give you time to get your First Aid & CPR.

- Successful completion of a two year certificate program in a relevant discipline.
- One year of related experience.
- 'Or' an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
* None of my previous experience was directly related to the position, but I'd worked with special-needs children & youth. I think they'd be happy to hear about any work you've done in the social services.

Skills & Abilities:
* Most of which I gained after working here for a while.

- Physically able to carry out the duties of the position.
- Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
- Ability to work as part of a team, using consensus based decision making
- Ability to establish and maintain supportive, non-judgmental and collaborative relationships with clients using a client centred model of care.
- Ability to educate individuals in harm reduction specific to substance use and physical/sexual health.
- Ability to work positively, patiently, and proactively with all clients, including those who may demonstrate a range of difficult behaviours including hostility, indifference, anger, extreme dependence.
- Ability to analyse problems and develop effective solutions.
- Ability to intervene in crisis situations, including de-escalate verbal aggression, hostility, suicidality, mental and physical health crises.
- Ability to perform light housekeeping duties including preparing rooms for new residents and general upkeep of the office space.
- Ability to communicate effectively both in writing and verbally.
- Ability to collaborate with other workers and services.
- Ability to advocate on the client’s behalf.
- Ability to organise and prioritise duties.
- Ability to operate office equipment including computer & database.
- Knowledge of Downtown Eastside health and community services.
- Working knowledge of the principles of harm reduction
- Knowledge of the diagnosis and resources in the areas of mental health, substance use, physical health, including HIV and Hepatitis C.
- Knowledge of the dynamics of oppression, specifically as related to the experience of mental health consumers and substance users.
