Title: Stay in the Shade Day/Theme: December 3rd: I appeal to your scratches and your tattered fur Series: Avatar, the Last Airbender Character/Pairing: Earth King, Bosco, Ursa. Rating: K
which always makes me wonder what his motives were and whether he'd thought through what he was undertaking
I sort of lean towards the fact that everything happened so quickly, his whole world being shaken up by, you know, the AVATAR, and then they LOSE and get kicked out of Ba Sing Se, and this kid king is sorta like "Well... hey, hehe, I'm no use to you as king anymore right?" and then hightails it to see what the REAL world is like. I feel like more than anything, an unconscious Aang is a reality check and why haven't I written this yet?
As for Ursa, I'm pretty sure she's still in the Fire Nation, but I kinda like her bumming it with the EK refugees. I imagine her and Iroh could run a helluva tea shop in downtown Ba Sing Se, if they could track her down.
By the way I think you might enjoy this, after our recent discussion re: the Fire Nation and its progressive military.
And Iroh finally up and delivered his drabble yesterday evening, which leaves Zuko, Azula, two pieces of framing narration, and touch-ups to go.
*Cheers on nebroadwe* Listen, if it all turns out like the opening... I have to say, I am always continuously impressed by how poetic your writing is. I am especially curious for Iroh's role in this. *whistles patiently*

Sounds logical to me ... why haven't you? :-) Mind you, my version of this has him heading off a bit too blithely to seek his fortune, like someone out of a fairy tale (of which he knows many, being cultured), only to realize that he's not all that well-prepared to make his way in the real world once the food runs out. (Or to escape the village beauty's hulking swains, when she's too impressed by his ballad-singing skills for their comfort ... let's just say, there are some situations in which you don't necessarily come loaded with bear. :-)

My Ursa's a bit too angsty for that, without a lot of character prep work (but if anybody could bring her around, it would be Iroh, natch). I'm not sure where she is, but I'm pretty sure that it's harsh, isolated, and penitential. (And that Zuko eventually finds her, probably with Aang along, and tries to convince her to come back, but she won't, and there's all kinds of emotional baggage to be worked through on the Zuko side and philosophical baggage -- of the justice/mercy/forgiveness/what happens when you have no good choices? -- side with Aang, because he got a lion-turtle to deus ex machina him out of his dilemma, but Ursa wasn't so lucky ... and I am, by heaven, not writing this. It would take flipping forever to get right.)

That is hugely precious. [bookmarks for sharing with other Mulan and Avatar fans]
Probably the same reason I haven't written that Suki backstory fic (Ironically, becoming a Kyoshi Warrior teaches her how to be feminine!) or that Kana bemoaning Pakku leaving her to fight with the White Lotus Society Fic (He's leaving her this time! History repeats itself!). Which is: Evil Aang's eaten the brain, mostly. However, the recent glurge of drabbles is an attempt to clear the brain before refocusing on Evil Aang for a bit, so maybe one of those will end up short fic'ed out before the end...

Heh, I like that - him sort of picturing himself as this gallant fairy tale hero, and yeah they go through some trials but nothing bad could REALLY happen to him! I feel for him. I sort of curse the writers for not giving us closure there, especially with a power vacuum existing in Ba Sing Se and their king wearing a loin cloth off last seen somewhere near the coast...
I'm not sure how good he'd be at being king. Maybe it's better for him to pass into a "Elvis is alive!" sort of myth...
I'm not sure where she is, but I'm pretty sure that it's harsh, isolated, and penitential.
I was SURE, enough to lay money on it, that we were going to find her with Iroh and the other old guys in the finale. Which, in hindsight, doesn't make sense in a story because Ursa can't bend (and would be useless in battle), not to mention that it's Zuko and Iroh's moment, and theirs alone, and it would cheapen it to have Ursa too, but yeah. That is completely what I thought was going to happen.
And that Zuko eventually finds her, probably with Aang along, and tries to convince her to come back, but she won't, and there's all kinds of emotional baggage to be worked through on the Zuko side
I am amazed that you mentioned this, considering Zuko and Ursa are one of the basic driving forces in the emotional arc of the Evil Aang AU. (Namely, Zuko finding out where Ursa is, realizing that she's had the power to come back to him this whole time and HASN'T, and why would she still be hiding from him?) And you are absolutely correct. It is taking forever to get right :D
