The *Other* Debate

... JACK LAYTON + ELIZABETH MAY = MY CANADIAN POLITICAL OTP

So in the interest of patriotism (and my mental health), I tuned into the other debate going on tonight: The Canadian Leaders' English debate. And I had no idea that the leaders of all the major political parties were so concerned about me and my poverty line, student, subsistence based existence. Oh Stephen! I didn't know you cared!

Alas, Stephen spent less of the night debating and most of the night leering across the table trying to envision Sarah Palin's head pasted on Gilles Duceppe's shoulders. That and showing off his best Data impression whenever another leader was speaking. And trying to drill a hole through Jack Layton's head with his hatred of the arts and the environment and smarts.

Applying Kyoto in Canada? Gilles! You thrill!

"Where is your platform? Under your sweater?" Oh Jack!

"You are a liar! Why are you saying that?" and "Don't believe Stephen Harper! Don't believe this man!" Ladies and gentleman: The sophisticated rhetorical stylings of Stephane Dion!

Elizabeth May was giving facts. Like, all night. What are these doing in a federal debate?

Forgiving doctors' and nurses' student debts as long as they commit to ten years as a family doctor? Fuck yeah, Jack Layton. If only you would forgive debts for over-achieving English and History majors...

Obviously the moderator was a bit... biased. One of his questions was: "Are Conservatives barbarians?" Subtle.

Stephen's defence of his cutting of the arts budget: "I'm artistic. I play a little piano." And the part where he said that he was increasing funding to Canadian museum's? Lies. I know museum's which have had to close because of the budget cuts. Entire communities have lost their way of preserve their history and enthusiastic and creative people are out of jobs.

Jack's connection to the arts? His wife, Olivia Chow (an awesome politician in her own right) is a sculptor. And he pointed out that the average salary of an artist in Canada is 10,000 - 12,000 a year. And the NDP's plan is making an artist's first $20,000 in income tax free.

And there's a lot of Sweden love in the room.
