Fantasy TMEA Schedule - Thursday 2/11/10

Feb 11, 2010 19:46

So, OK, I'm not in Texas for TMEA this year. I'm back here observing a little bit of choir and mainly staying in from the bad weather and anticipating the Olympics. Can't afford TMEA every year. But it's the first year I haven't gone since 2005. So, here's my fantasy TMEA schedule, or what I would go to if I was there. Based on the actual schedule. Kind of like where you know you can't have the rich desserts but you can at least go smell them.

Wednesday, February 10
7:30 p.m. USAF Band of the West Jazz Band. Not much else going on that day unless you're involved in meetings or All-State chair auditions. (which in no way puts the band down; all the military ones are great)

Thursday, February 11
8:00 a.m. Building and Maintaining Successful Small School Percussion Programs.
9:00 a.m. go back and rest, wait for exhibit hall to open
10:00 a.m. be the first in the exhibit halls, ready for some fun free samples and instrument tryouts
11:00 a.m. Jazz Piano Greats: Transcriptions of Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, and George Shearing. (note - of course this one has a product marketing thing associated with it, as many of the seminars do, but I like the idea of helping classically trained pianists branch off into other types of music that aren't always written down in the way we expect)
12:00 - hit the lunch table, see a bit of the Rugare Marimba Ensemble at the Showcase
(12:30 - Essential Technique for the Contemporary Vibraphonist sounds good, but you can't be everywhere. Perhaps sneak in the back for the end if it's non-intrusive.)
2:00 p.m. - Troubleshooting Tips for Trumpeters. (I need more general brass knowledge)
3:30 p.m. - Harlingen HS Women's Choir
4:00 p.m. - Newman Smith HS A Cappella Choir
5:00 p.m. - dinner in Rivercenter Mall
6:30 p.m. - Musical Phrases in Percussion (it's Mark Ford. I enjoyed his clinic last year and finally got to learn the stories behind his mallet technique pieces)
7:30 p.m. - Publishers Showcase. (it goes on for a while, mainly elementary and easy choir music and alternating different publishers. Probably some sight reading involved. I go to reading sessions for entertainment. And, of course, to learn about the repertoire.)

See, that's where I am right now. In my fantasy life. In my real life, I'm at work. Nothing wrong with that. In fact, it's a very good reason to have not gone to TMEA. I do miss it, though, especially thinking about it. I will be back one of these days. Even if I'm teaching in AL - it's good professional development, right? I mean, we have AMEA and I go, and that's good, but the Texas version has such a huge selection.

Let me get this lab set up (my real life job) and I'll be back to make my fantasy schedule for tomorrow.
