Beautiful nor-easter this afternoon. I promised myself I'd go for a sail if I finished my List of Things to Do. So I did - such a great sense of release, not racing, just sailing on the bay, going where I wanted, practising tacks and gybes. I sailed up to a shiny grey powerboat and thought - how sucked in is he? (For sure it was a he.) Thousands of dollars in petrol and not even half the fun.

When I got home Chris was grumpy because he had once more lost a work file - when will he learn to save the damn things?? He went to get Miriam but after some time I noticed she had not actually come back inside after ballet - she was found on the verandah of the new next-door-but-one neighbours' house, chatting away. The new neighbours are a cololurful bunch of lesbians who have a Mexican hairless dog called SalJ, the chief source of fascination for Mim, as well as a kelpie cross called Bella. Miriam sees nothing untoward in chatting away with the friendly girls while dressed in an extremely brief pair of shorts and leotard and ugg boots; to their credit, the girls seem very nice, although Laura has piercings in every available piece of flesh. Since Mim has grown up coming to the markets with me she sees nothing unusual in this. I love that she has had this bohemian upbringing so that she does not prejudge anybody based on socially-stratified criteria. I think her own private criteria are dog-based, actually.

I'm going to Germany right after Christmas to look after my sister. I can't quite believe Christmas is so close. We're having it here this year, so theoretically I'm in charge of the menu etc. - at last, I need have no meat at the table! But that means I need to think about it all now, rather than 4 days before as I usually do.
