Pern-ish-ness

I read Dragon's Kin yesterday. You know, the newest book by Anne McCaffrey and her son, Todd. I'm going to re-read the Skies of Pern...in which I came to the conclusion that Anne has gone completely crazy. I don't know what happened with Dragon's Kin, but I found it to be highly disappointing and boring through most parts. It took me about six hours to read, admittedly I skimmed over some parts because they were mind-numbingly boring.

Seriously...it was supposed to be a book about whers, and aside a small part at the beginning, you don't read anymore about them until you're more than half-way through the book. The main character doesn't even really care about them...He wants to be a Harper. Another major character, Nuella...she drives me nuts. She's blind, the daughter of the head miner guy, and she's kept hidden from the rest of the camp because he thinks that they'll...think he's weak or something for having a blind daughter.

She's got a spit-fire personality, of course, and she's better with the wher (which we FINALLY see eventually) than her handler, she gets along perfectly with the dragonriders, and the dragons even comment that she "could ride gold." If she wasn't blind, of course. More angst, as if having the main character's family die in a mining accident wasn't enough. By the end of the book, she's training whers and their riders, she's referred to as "Lady Nuella" and she ends up bonding to the main character's wher. So he goes off to be a Harper, yay. "It's like she was always yours anyway, I was just helping you take care of her"...Feh. I don't like her at all. Maybe it's just me.

The book, in general, was basically about mining and a boy who wanted to become a Harper. The funny thing, I think, is that these kids are eleven and twelve Turns old, and they act like they're at least fifteen. And that the book is supposed to be about whers, and you don't even really get a good description of them and their habits.

The only bright notes...I now know what's canon for wher names and wher Impressions, such as they are. Now I need to re-read Skies and familiarize myself with the telekinesis thing...which takes some getting used to, I'll tell you...

I'm a really big Pern fan, though, honest. I <3 dragons. ^_^
