Today was kinda...I dunno, not too bad.

Had to be at work at seven. Got bitched at because I was five minutes late. Incidentally, this was because my grandmother is sick, and I was making sure that she was okay and didn't need me to take her to the doctor. I told them this, but I don't think they believed me. Oh well.

Proceeded to get to work. I don't know why people seem to pick holiday weekends to do home improvement, but they do. I had way too many customers and not enough help. You know, this job is a big change from the fast food. I mean, there, there wasn't so much to deal with. Just the food. If somebody had a problem, you remade their order. Simple.

Here, though, there is just so much stuff...And with delivery and whatnot, and a really weird computer system, and computers being stupid, it's just insane.

And hardly anyone seems to realize that a.) I'm a cashier. Which is really low on the store totem pole. I do my best, but I just don't have the authorization to do some stuff, and b.) We have computer counts and inventory and stuff to worry about. I have to do things a certain way. It's store policy crap.

If the computer won't take your credit card/check, is it not my fault. It's usually not the store's fault. It's the bank. Griping at us isn't going to do any good.

On a customer service note, take this situation into consideration. I have five customers who all need help. I'm trying my best to help them, and get other people to assist me. If somebody else comes up to insist that I help them, they should realize that it's going to be a minute. I can't just ignore the people that I'm working with at the moment to help THEIR problem. Your problem is no more (or less) important to me than Billy-Bob's over there.

I REALLY don't give a crap if you spend ten thousand dollars in the store a year, or a hundred. I treat all customers equally, regardless of how much money they spend.

If you're a rude bastard, I'll still do my best to help you, assuming you don't start cussing at me, but don't expect me to be overjoyed with it. And if you start cussing at me (thankfully haven't had that problem yet) I'm going to call a manager and let them deal with it. I refuse to let anybody treat me like that, because I know I don't deserve it.

While I'm listing pet peeves...Look, I work at the register, okay. There are two registers right beside each other. Me, being ONE (1) person, I can only run ONE (1) register at a time. You can tell which register I am running by looking at the LIGHT. Yes, there is a number at the top there, and it will be on. I don't care if I'm standing under register two (which is, incidentally, within two feet of register three), if the light is on at register three THAT is where I am working. If you come through the other way, you're just a dork. A really annoying dork.

When you come up to the right register, I'll be right there to check you out. I swear. It won't take me long to take two steps over there.

Another one. If you come up to the register with a cart full of small parts, and just sit there and wait for me to take it all out and ring it up, you're going to have to wait a while longer than you would if you'd stop being lazy. Honestly. People at grocery stores don't pull stuff out of your cart for you, so why should I have to do it? I will, but you'd darn better not complain that it's taking too long.

Sales tax in Tennesse is crazy. I know that, these people know that, but time after time I get people complaining about their total. Look, you can do the math yourself...add up everything you got, multiply that total by .095 and add that total to the original total, and ta da! You have your final total! The computer calculates that. If it says that's what your total is, that's what it is. I can understand if you think that I got something twice or whatever, but once we have established that I have correctly rung up everything (which I usually do the first time), the griping should stop. It is, get this, not my fault that sales tax is too high.

Ranty? Yeah. I can't help it, after dealing with some people. >.
