I've been itching to write again for quite some time now. Finally, I just decided to sit and see where it took me. A long time ago, I had an idea for something like this as an introduction for NanoWrimo. But that Nano never took place, so the idea's been mulling in my mind since then.
The character is my own original work. His story is easily the most complicated I have ever created, but just as easily it is the story which fascinates me the most. He is also the hardest to get going.
Only a few of you in my friends list have met him. Only one of you knows him as dearly as I do. But I will share him with you nonetheless.
Ladies and gentlemen, I bring you Gabriel Veritas.
Deep down in his heart, he always knew his dreams were to remain a fantasy. In his dreams, he could still hear her voice, still feel her touch upon his skin, still see the mischievous look in her eyes as she concocted her latest plot to drive him mad. He should have known better than to trust in his dreams. Luck had never been on his side during his lifetime; for him to expect otherwise now was nearly absurd.
As he stood amongst the ruins, gazing upon the rubble that had once been his home, it was shockingly clear just how wrong his dreams had been. The ruins were a mere shadow of what it had been in its days of glory, the fallen stone saying nothing of what had been behind its walls during its height.
It also said nothing of what had become of those that had lived within them, except for the most omninous of conclusions. There was no reason not to think its inhabitants had fallen right with the building when it came crashing to the ground. Whatever had brought about these ruins would have had no mercy for the people within its walls.
But as his hazel eyes searched almost numbly amongst the ruins, his gaze found itself rising to the horizon. Perhaps his dreams were not as wrong as he had thought; or perhaps he was just too frightened to give them up. Because as he took in the rays of the rising sun that were beginning to spread across the sky, he knew in his heart that he was not the only one that looked upon it on this day.
Somewhere, he knew that she did as well.
