A dog or a cat might come to us when we call it, hoping for a trick or a treat, but as we fail to produce some, it would loose interest, preferring to go about their business, sniffing, strolling, looking around in search of something that would catch their attention. That is, unless they are conditioned otherwise, by example and exercise. A Chukotka Sled Dog, for instance, might learn some of the mushing behavior from its peers, though we have but little doubt that underperforming it will know of the whip.
Just so, the human attention, seemingly responsive at first, might in a longer term be opposed to a verbally conscious effort.
The “effortless verbal will” is, to a large degree, a will that can muster a prolonged change in attention.

Now, if the attention is wandering, then hypnosis is akin to taking a dog by the leash and leading it every step of the way.
