Character idea - a social media undertaker. When you die, he goes around the web and shuts down your presence - makes final posts in your name in forums, alerts your Twitter followers, updates your blog and Facebook pages with the news and lets people know where to send flowers. Part web expert, part detective, part grief counselor.
A few different story ideas immediately come to mind:
- He realizes that his new client was murdered and has to find the killer
- He realizes that his new client never actually existed in the first place
- He's hired to fake someone's death
- He's hired to fake someone's life by creating a net presence for a fictional person / cover identity.
This could go as a straight crime story (in which case the undertaker probably needs to know kung fu or have dangerous friends), or in a more fantastic / magical realist direction, which is probably more likely if I'm writing it.
I had this idea a few years back for a story about an 'auditor' who would scour the web for every image, word or bit of footage about someone, then use it to create a memorial for them; the story would have involved him discovering multiple, conflicting versions of people's lives, possibly from alternate realities or something. Maybe mix in a level of that; maybe have the undertaker's - actually, let's call him the Auditor, I like that - creating lives or erasing lives or generally discovering that his actions change reality rather than describe it.
Hmm.
Memo to my muse - I don't need any more fucking ideas right now. I have enough. How about sending me the focus and motivation I need to finish the things I've already started? And possibly some cocaine. Thanks.
