I like that they did too. And yes, Thranduil is different, "less wise and more dangerous," more fey. A more elven elf, if that makes sense.
But I think it's also important to note that Elrond, Galadriel and Celeborn are all seen in the trilogy through they eyes of the hobbits, who frankly don't have a clue what's going on with them! There are these immense, fascinating, bloody, sensual histories full of murder, seduction and mayhem that the hobbits know absolutely nothing about except that there are some poems about it. So I don't actually think that they're as bloodless as they appear to the hobbits in say, the arrival scene in Lorien. I think the really meaty stuff is happening off screen, because the hobbits know nothing about it.
Which of course is the fun thing to explore, yes? :) I love that PJ and company have done that. The White Council scenes in An Unexpected Journey were wonderful because rather than sticking to Bilbo's pov, when he knows nothing about it, we saw how they act when they're not in front of an audience, with all the jockeying for position and brain-texting under the table.
Thranduil's exclusion from the White Council is interesting. I wonder if he didn't want to or wasn't asked? Ditto Celeborn's, as Celeborn is Elrond's senior by hundreds of years and rules a realm. I suspect you couldn't pay Celeborn enough to come to these meetings, and he figures he'll hear about it later.
Not a lot of overanalyzing at all! It's fun! Please do!
The hobbits can't even really conceive of what the elves, particularly those three, have been through. The Lorien scene is a great example, because as 'magical' as the arrival is, and the whole grieving for Gandalf thing, the ethereal quality of it doesn't ring true
I think that scene is the weakest in the first movie, which I generally love. But I don't think it comes off, that particular scene, because there's not enough information for the viewer about what's really going on. There was mystery but it wasn't enough. i thought it needed to depart more from the book, actually, to make it work in a different medium.
I do love that White Council scene. I wonder what Galadriel will wear to save Gandalf's butt? A white gown is lovely, but not really appropriate for tearing up fortresses. On the other hand, if Radagast came in sounding the alarm she may just have come as she was. I hope there is Celeborn too, but I doubt it as that would mean casting and using another actor for one scene.
I think you're absolutely right about Thranduil after the Last Alliance. I think he's done. And we know the archers from the Greenwood were cut to pieces in the last battle. I think he won't risk his people again unless he has to.
Celeborn -- yeah, I can see that he has no patience for this! And besides, Galadriel will tell him the important bits without the arguing till dawn bits! :)
I posted a new story with Celeborn, Aragorn, Thranduil and Legolas!
No, it's not just you. I read that was one of the first scenes filmed on the first movie, and I don't think they quite had it together yet. It's kind of overplayed? Like they're trying too hard to make this otherworldly and mysterious instead of trusting that the actors can carry it? I think that's something they do better later, but that scene just doesn't quite get there. IMO the cut scene with Celeborn and Aragorn is much better and has more focus.
The dark lord dress would be perfect! I hope for Celeborn, but I don't expect him. Though I hope there is more Galadriel/Gandalf shippiness to feed my soul! :)
I totally agree that Celeborn is the practical and down to earth one -- very literally, in touch with the earth in a very elf way. I mean, Elrond has walls and fireplaces. Celeborn lives in a tree!
I like both, but I admit I'm more likely myself to join Galadriel and Celeborn, the original tree-huggers! Arwen's hippie grandparents who live in their RV....
