According to Sumerian beliefs, Anu (sky-god, god of heaven, lord of constellations, king of gods, spirits and demons, and who dwelt in the highest heavenly regions) had a great-granddaughter named Inanna. In Akkadian, she was called Ishtar. In Northwestern Semitic regions, the cognate of her name is Astarte. In Jewish mythology, she is referred to as Ashtoreth.
