I walk to work every day--6 miles round trip, two hours of walking--and it's very special to me. I wear my headphones and enjoy the sunshine while spending some time to myself to daydream and wonder and fall in love with the world all over again. The music that I listen to feels like a part of me and it colors the entire experience of walking through the city. That's something that's so wonderful about the age of portable music: all of a sudden, even walking home from work can become an exhilarating emotional experience. Here are some of my favorite songs to listen to while I'm walking:
"The Gift That Keeps Giving," by Super Furry Animals This song makes me so grateful for all of the good things in my life, and reminds me that I am really, really lucky to be able to pursue my dreams so freely at a time when many people are unable to fulfill their desires; sometimes because of financial reasons, but usually because of guilt, or shame, or verbal abuse keepin' a man down! It also reminds me to give as much as I can.
"It's a Good Day to be You," by MC Honky I dedicate this song to my big sister Suzie and my twin Katie, just because I know it will crack them up. "You are very well read... but you don't make me feel stupid. Thank you."
"Back in Your Head," by Tegan and Sara This song is just. Too. Adorable. I mean, they're Canadian. Canadian twins. Of course I am going to love them. When I hear this song I totally get into a twin vibe and even though it kinda makes me miss my Katie, the overwhelming cuteness of the song makes up for it.
"I Heard it Through the Grape Vine," covered by The Slits Believe it or not, I actually prefer this cover over Marvin Gay's original, anytime. It's ferosh!
"Little Bird," by Goldfrapp This song is like a trip to Never Never Land, where you never have to grow up and it's safe to wear your heart on your sleeve. If this song had a smell, it would smell like tea and cookies. If this song were a place, it would be your first apartment away from home. If this song were a person, it would be your boyfriend who finally teaches you how to ride a bike when you're 20 years old. ;-P
Speaking of bikes, I am so excited because I got my helmet today! Of course I took a picture! And but of course it was a perfect excuse to get another pic of these AWESOME spectacles! (Which I will NOT be cycling in, by the way, considering they totally obstruct my vision and entirely defeat the purpose of eyewear...but still. They are so fun.) I went over to Trophy Bikes today and got a lock, a cable, a kicky bell with a brontosaurus on it, cushy gloves, and an empty bank account. ;-P
