Yes, yes, so I've been horribly out of touch. For fuckssake, what else is new? Thought I would pop in here and post an update of my life, blahblahblah.
Ready? Set? Weeeeeee!
School is going well, but keeping me very very busy. This college encourages its students to get involved volunteering for the community, and my grantwriting course is providing me with some very in-demand skills in the non-profit sector in Olympia. It's interesting work (grant writing) and something I could see myself doing as a career. Thus, I'm putting all my energy into it right now hoping to gain experiences that will help me secure jobs in the future.
I'm up at the college working in the computer lab right now. I have some research to do for the grantwriting course I'm taking. For my grantwriting project, I chose to work with
YesYes, the local community art studio / gallery to help them establish their non-profit status and also to write a grant for them to get some start up funding. It's an internship, I guess you could say. It's certainly something that I'll be able to put on my resume later, especially if I'm successful in securing a grant for the organization. It's an extremely involved process and is taking up a lot of my time right now, but it's *great* experience to be getting! I have a feeling that I'll be doing some volunteer coordinating as well, as there doesn't seem to be anyone else with the necessary time or skills to do the job justice at this point.
I also have a friend here who has a friend on the Board of Directors for the Washington State Comission for the Arts. I'm going to be contacting her in the next couple of days to see if I can secure a formal internship that would allow me to work with and shadow the grantwriter for that organization. I thought that would be great experience too, and since I have the connection, I figure, why not?!?
Finally, I volunteered to be in charge of promoting a collaborative fundraiser that the art studio (YesYes) is holding for
EGYHOP (Emma Goldman Youth and Homeless Outreach Project) a local social service organization that provides outreach ( i.e. food, clothing, and referrals to social services) to the local population of homeless youth (i.e. nappy ass street kids). I'm also in charge of the logistics of the operation and setting up a booth for the fundraiser at Artwalk this Friday.
So, yeah, I'm pretty busy right now. And, as a bonus, I'm genuinely interested and engaged in everything I'm learning and doing! What more could I ask for?
How about a cute little pixy haicut? Got one of those yesterday. It was out of sheer necessity; all of the humidity and rain here does a number on my hair. Now it's all chopped off and I don't have to fuck with it anymore - quite utilitarian. (OMG - I sound like my mother, talking about my friggin hair! Oy vey!)
Anyway, gotta get back to the grind. Hope this finds each and every one of you well (you know - all three of you who actually read this thing. My three favorite people, by the way...)
Much love,
Jennifer
