The Space Between Us
Hair pulled back into a messy bun at the nape of her neck, sunglasses on, Anna hummed casually as she headed to a salon near New York University. This whole waist-length hair scene was getting old, difficult to maintain, and highly annoying. The way it knotted and tangled every night when she went to bed, the hours she spent getting ready in the morning just trying to tame her mane... too high-maintenance for her. Pushing past a crowd of students, she stopped in her tracks and froze when she caught sight of Alexie standing in the courtyard with a class of students doing a demonstration with a physics professor. He looked as if he hadn't changed a bit in the last two years, aside from standard aging and a light haircut. What did catch her eye, though, was the way his smile seemed just the slightest bit empty.
"As you can see here, the more aerodynamic the design, the less fuel and energy are required to fly and control the plane." He glanced up at the crowd of passersby looking in on the lecture and Anna's cheeks flushed bright red as she ducked behind a few taller men.
"Calm, Anna, calm. No fireworks show. Not here. Not with him." Anna cursed quietly as she weaved past the people and ducked into an alley, causing a trashcan to explode near her. She'd been able to control her powers just fine. Working with her crew at their private investigators' firm had helped her with that. But when Alexie came into the picture she started blowing shit up. Which was normal... okay, with Andy's ferns it was normal. Regardless, she smiled, just happy to see he was alive and well-off.
Anna... Shivers shot down her spine as she heard Alexie whispering her name in her mind. And then the tears began to well in her eyes. Often, hell almost every day she wondered if running away was a mistake. If they would ever speak again, much less kiss. Or become something more. Frankly, the thought of him was enough to bring her to tears. It hurt. She could control how she handled the death of her mother and Eva, but she couldn't control how she felt for him. The distance was too much to bear...
Fumbling Towards Ecstasy
"I'll meet you back at the office, I have to look at those coroner's reports again." Alison, her high school friend and the firm's resident Medical Examiner - who happened to be an Other - ran off, leaving Anna to wrangle information out of their rat Charlie on her own.
"Can't those visions come at a time when I need them to?" Anna sighed, making sure her badge stayed clipped to the belt she wore with her jeans and black button-up dress shirt. She was a PI. She didn't need a uniform. And being an Other - a deadly one at that - she didn't need a gun. Rounding the corner, she cursed when she bumped into a man and her badge fell to the ground with his folder, papers spilling out all over the sidewalk.
"I'm so sorry." He knelt down and handed her the badge as she took her sunglasses off. "...Anna?"
The voice was a familiar one she recognized as she gathered the papers together. "Oh my God... Alexie?" Her hair had been cut into layers that fell just past her collarbone and her bangs still fell into her eyes as they had two years ago. She looked up at him and blushed.
Alexie stood, looking her over in shock and relief. "When did you...?"
"A-about a year ago. I've been working as a PI for Others. I came back after I managed to control my powers." She smiled a bit awkwardly, staring at the ground. "You look good, Alexie."
"You do too." He was upset with her for leaving, very much hurt that she left and she'd been in the city for a year but hadn't so much as called. But he could understand the fear she had with her powers. She never wanted to hurt him. "It's good to see you, Anna. I- I've missed you."
Blushing again, she looked up a bit. "I missed you too. Alexie, I'm sorry I ran away and I hurt you but... I was so scared. I spent so much time blowing up anything I touched and I couldn't- not you, I couldn't risk hurting you. I had to be sure before I came back and before I could see you." A few tears rolled down her cheeks.
Tucking the folder in his bag, Alexie stepped closer to her and when she didn't flinch he pulled her into his arms. "Shh, it's okay. Let it out."
"I would, but... I'd blow you up." She said softly, wrapping her arms around him. "Haven't mastered the art of controlling my explosions when I'm crying yet."
He smiled. "You'll get there."
Anna nodded and pulled back, looking down. "I'm so sorry."
"It's okay. I understand, and I forgive you." He brushed the tears from her eyes and kissed her forehead. "I'm sorry, I have to get going for my afternoon class. We'll talk more over dinner?"
"I'd like that." She smiled as she pulled out a business card and pressed it into his hand. "It's a date?" When Alexie smiled and nodded, Anna let go of him and watched him walk away before turning to rattle Charlie's cage. It was a rough road, but they'd get there someday...
