a beacon of hope from the sands

this piece is not about any particular person, but more of the way I feel at peace at a certain spot at Hampton Beach.

You stand at the end of the beach

Under the gaze of the moon

where the sea and my heart ebb and flow together

I sit atop my own Stonehenge

pounded smooth by its constant battle with the tide

The surf gnashes against the rocks

But I’m protected from the angry sea

By a mighty destroyer of waves.

I gaze reservedly up into the night sky

And it peers back through me

And in this timeless exchange

All is known, all is communicated

You stand at the end of the beach

And although no words are spoken

There is complete understanding

Over the vast distance

Our eyes meet and I can see

All the trifles of life

Pooling up in your eyes

Running down your cheeks

And into the ocean

Yet

You never flinch

Never blink

Never dry your eyes

Only smile

Your smile is a beacon of hope from the sands

A herald of a bright future

I want to capture this light and betray the night

So that the darkness will fear us

And obscure no longer the path before us

I gaze once more out over the dark ocean

Each molecule reflecting the moon in its own unique way

And relief overcomes me then

For I know when the darkness comes

You’ll be standing there with a light

At the end of the beach
