Still life

Hi, my name is arsg66 and I've been Twilight-free for 10 days.

I am rather attracted to the notion of ripping on Twilight. Just to go head-to-head with a die-hard Twilight fan sounds like fun. Now, it's not to say we wouldn't be able to come to some agreeing notions. If you wanted to argue that Twilight was a book you wanted to read for sole trivial entertainment, okay. Have fun with reading. I mean, I think arguing about the book is fun, so you know, we can both get what we want. Of course, the burning desire to curse endlessly has tapered off within the time I finished reading the book and now. I won't tear anyone's head off. In fact, I would be inclined to respectfully disagree with one's opinion instead and leave it as that. Surely a great example of how time heals.

I said I would get to the whole HP v. Twilight comparison. That time has come. To me, attempts at establishing similarities between the two has had me greatly perplexed. The magic (if you will excuse my choice of words) of HP was discovering along side Harry that depth of the wizarding world unseen. Learning about a society which Rowling developed quite well that functions with different colloquialism, traditions, social exchange, etc. was what captivated me as a reader. The author took her creative liberty to fashion intricacy into her story, a fantasy that could fascinate all audiences. That's my basic impression of what HP means. Imagine my surprise when I'm half way through a book and the only label I can find for it is "love story." Vampires, yes, but that's really irrelevant. Listen, the conflict between Bella and Edward is purely superficial; it only retains the slightest minute undertone of danger because HE NEVER HURTS HER. Or slips up in front of her. Yeah yeah, you can TALK about how close you were to ripping someone's throat off, but it never seems to have the same affect when it's done in a loving and concerned tone. Can I get some samples of feral glare in the eyes? A slow calculated stalk? Something to let me know he was just about to shred her to pieces. He didn't care about her in the beginning. I want to see an interaction with a lapse in control. Try as you might to say that his outstanding morals made it able to stave off the lure long enough to get the hell away from her....no, he was pretty much peeing in his pants to get a taste of her (and stalking watching her every night) and I, the reader, don't get to experience any of it? Make him act in a trance where he kidnaps her and is about to go through with it only to snap out at the last second or be pulled away by one of his family. I don't care. Some shit one way or the other should have gone down. Without it, the danger aspect of their "relationship" is not encompassed and the focus just lies on their nondescript love which by the way is nothing special because that is how all swooning girls caught up in the IDEA of love imagine an ideal relationship to go. Your garden variety mix. Nothing to make the characters or interactions unique.

Bella and Harry both have the self-sacrificing gene, yet there's a distinction. Bella's love isolated her. Harry's love surrounded him. Now you tell me, which is the healthier of the two?

Well kiddies, I'm off. I'll be back to shoot off some more.
