On
wish_list this year,
emeraldarrows asked for h/c recommendations.
Hunger Games
The Long Road Home series, by
deathmallow I know it's intimidating in its size. Read it anyway. If NOTHING else, read the second and the fifth. Because not only is this amazing h/c, it's mindblowingly good fanfic. It's the kind of fanfic where you're like "oh wow, I wish this had been the source material." It asks all the right "what if?" questions and comes up with awesome answers. The characters and world-building are fantastic, and yeah, people get pretty damn hurt, and then there's slow, careful, quiet comfort.
Sherlock Holmes (RDJ movies)
Jack-in-the-Box by
estefee This story has a little bit of everything, underweight, ill Holmes, pining!Holmes, and a Watson and Mary who patch him up and take care of him just right.
MCU
Silhouette, Step into the Streetlight by caughtinanocean
I'm a sucker for hooker!fic. This is past hooker!fic and the h/c is emotional, but it's no less awesome for that.
Thawed Out by auburn and eretria
Another post-CATWS fic, this is one of those that kind of takes you apart and puts you back together carefully.
Revenant by
stele3 More post-CATWS fic. Stele's pretty much worth reading even if she decides to re-write phone books? But yes, this is definitely something you should invest your time and your heart into.
Spiral Galaxy by
freshbakedlady A Natasha-centric fic, the h/c in this one is subtle and yet still somehow packs a punch. It's hard to explain, but Natasha's life is one big long hurt, and then there's people like Clint, and Fury, and May.
Say Your Prayers and Light a Fire by
shadowen Another one of those authors wher eyou should read everything they've ever written (I feel that way about pretty much everyone on this list...) this has a lot of learning-to-be-loved, which is one of my favorite h/c tropes.
Unpaved Road of Good Intentions series by
hoosierbitch Oh man. Teenage!Clint who's broken and wary and too stubborn to show anyone, and Coulson who just...keeps making mistakes but always fixes them.
Fractures Emanating by harcourt
Man, there are all these moments where you're like YOU NEED A HUG SO BADLY except it's not that simple.
Bond Status by
desert_neon I love fics where something goes wrong in the whole soulmate process. This one hits all the right notes.
What You Don't Know (Can Hurt a Lot) by Alex51324
This is a xover with a sort of AU set up in Sentinel. You do not need to know either Sentinel canon or the AU canon to follow--I know, I read it without knowing either.
Stargate Atlantis
Animal Husbandry by
casspeach I'm actually a John/Ronon girl, but this story is too much perfection not to rec, eveything about it makes me ache in the most beautiful way.
Hindsight by
rageprufrock Hilariously also John/Rodney, but the way John is just so resigned in this kills me.
Teen Wolf
Little Wild Animal series by discontentedwinter
The second story is about two original characters. You won't care. You will want to read a billion more words in this universe.
The Searching Ceremonies series by kouriarashi
Be prepared: this author has written literally over a million words and you will want to read every single one of them.
Out of Focus by exclamation
Any story that starts off with Stiles hungry and cold is a story that is all right by me.
Sinking Ships by standinginanicedress
Heartbreaking and hopeful in all the best ways.
The Moon's Gonna Follow Me Home by turningterrific
A quiet rebuilding story, it's almost easy to miss the h/c except how its imbued into everything.
The Boy and the Beast by dira sudis (dsudis)
Having to choose one fic by Dira was like trying to pick a favorite child, but I went with this one because I think it packs the most h/c content of all of hers. Though there are some other top runners. But they don't balance quite like this fic does, so, yes.
When Romes in Ruins (We Are the Lions) by Kedreeva
One of my friends yelled at me for reccing this somewhere once, because she stayed up all night reading it. Just saying.
By Moon and Stars by
kellifer_fic I love arranged marriage fic. And Kellifer. Mmm, perfect storm.
A Desperate Arrangement by mikkimouse
Oh, look at that. More arranged marriage fic. With a totally different bent and every bit as much awesomeness.
Red Witch by rootbeer
Captive!fic is also something I enjoy quite a bit. And people being their own heroes. Also people being heroes for each other.
Smoke & Mirrors by doodle
Normally I find fics where characters all of a sudden have completely non-canonical siblings weird, but this one does everything so right. So right.
Wild Horses by thepsychicclam
Sometimes, I really like cowboy AUs. It's so easy to break cowboys.
That's all I've got for now, although I'm sure I could rustle up more given more hours--this took me longer than I want to admit. I hope some of these are new to you, and are your bag. Happy New Year!
