And suddenly I became aware that it was summer and I was right in the middle of it. The jack o' lantern glow rising up from the horizon at night told me so and echoed memories of Halloween, struggled with those of June past spent in the company of friends and lovers, and sank quietly back in the sky with a defeated groan that sounded suspiciously like lonely birds crying in the sweltering night.
