Central processing unit (CPU)
3.2 GHz Cell processor: one PowerPC-based "Power Processing Element" and seven 3.2 GHz Synergistic Processing Elements (SPEs). Only seven SPEs are active; the eighth is redundant, to improve yield.
Graphics processing unit (GPU)
(none of this will mean anything to anyone...): Based on NVIDIA NV47 architecture. Clocked at 550 MHz. 128-bit DDR memory interface. 136 shader operations per clock ( * 550 Mhz = 74.8 billion / second, 100 billion with CPU). 128-bit pixel precision. 33 billion dot products per second (51 billion dot products with CPU).
Memory
Total 512 MB, split into: 256 MB Rambus XDR DRAM clocked at CPU die speed (3.2 GHz), 256 MB GDDR3 VRAM clocked at 700 MHz.
System bandwidth
204.8 GB/s Cell Element Interconnect Bus (Theoretical peak performance). 51.2 GB/s SPE to local store. 25.6 GB/s to Main Ram XDR DRAM: 64 bits × 3.2 GHz / 8 bits to a byte. # 22.4 GB/s to GDDR3 VRAM: 128 bits × 700 MHz × 2 accesses per clock cycle (one per edge) / 8 bits to a byte # RSX 20 GB/s (write), 15 GB/s (read).
...mention of 720x480 interlaced resolution to 1920x1080 progressive/interlaced resolution is mentioned. this will have little meaning unless youre shelling out thousands on your next television/monitor. the output will be able to run anything up to 1080p (this is in reference to the progressive scan just mentioned), which means, if something in the game has pores, youll be able to see them. there are also ethernet ports (internet access and browsing), 4 usb 4.0 ports, a bluetooth edr and wifi (for the 60gb model) (enabling wireless routing). there will be a constantly running online service/connection for games and browsing, which will remain free, unless game creators decide to charge for service (as is common in many MMOs such as WoW).
the storage for the software is apparently in multiple formats, meaning the system is backwards compatible, using; blu-ray discs, dvd, cd, sacds. it comes with a preinstalled 20/60gb hard disk (depending on model), and comes with linux preinstalled (and possibly a version of the cross media bar), which (if im right in assuming this) it will allow you to create your own content ON the system, and even write/play your own games.
