The show last night was amazing. Headed upto Pheonix with DR to see In Flames, Trivium and two other bands. Stood outside for an hour trying to get the willcall tickets (A very well arranged event as you can tell) but managed eventually to get in to see Devil Driver. Spent most of that set with a smirk on my face as the lead singer was grunting his ways through his lyrics but using hand motions to try and give us a clue as to what the hell he was screaming about. They weren't bad but ended up just being another heavy metal band that sounded like soooo many others. But halfway through he tells the crowd to form a circle pit "One so big that I can see you guys running". I think I have been out of the metal scene for too long as I have no idea what a circle pit is and why anyone would want to run around it. I remember far to well the mosh pits as I have spent far to many years at concerts prowling around them (and getting injured) but I watched a bunch of teeneage guys run around in circles while the guy kept screaming down the mike. This concept really needs to be explained to me.
Trivium were amazing although the sound guy really needed a good old fashioned slap around the head. They broke in a little Pantera "Walk" halfway through and I was suprised to see the dumb founded look on half of the crowds face. Maybe they were young but I thought most metal heads new the words to that one. That moment was almost as suprising as when Metallica (2000) stated they were going to play Master of Puppets and the guys in front of me got all excited because they thought it was a new song. Next to us though this second circle appeared and I got a little excited thinking that I may find out what a "circle pit" really was only to watch a bunch of teenagers performing some kind of really bad martial arts moves to the music, another thing that really needs to be explained to me.
In Flames finally arrived playing a lot of new stuff from their unreleased album and then a number of older numbers. Of course I recognised about 2 of them as I have been listening to them solidly for about 4 days *smile* Again the sound man needed a good slapping and it seemed that the lead singer started to lose his voice but hell did they kick some ass. The band as a whole are just some damn tight and present a pretty cool show steming from the likes of Sepultura and Slayer. Nice to see the bass player doing fugure of eights with his 2 foot long hair as he kept perfect timing with the drummer leading to a chest pounding wave of sound, love it.
So if any one can explain to me the "circle pit" and "teenagers doing bad martial arts" to me it would be much appreciated. Guess that is what happens when you wear a concert T-shirt to a show that is older than most of the people there.
