Invasion of the Brits

After a rather messed up day of running around Tucson for no real reason and not really getting a lot of progress made at work I decided that a trip to Club Congress to see the KFMA $1 show might be in order. I have started to realise that staring at four walls in an evening really is not the best way to pass time, so tucking my problems with large crowds and interacting with strangers behind me I nervously appeared downtown. I sometime wonder if I appear as a startled deer in headlights when I enter into a bar / club / venue or just what kind of first impression I really do create. I have been told by many that I am pretty damn unapproachable when I am out by myself and smiles and nods just seem to pass me by even though I could be looking directly at the person.

But anyhow, it was nice to bump into Siyeh, WR, pissang and jenmelog, have a quick chat with them all and then wave them all on their way before the concert even started. First band up was The Year of Acceleration and I am sure it is just me but a guitar and a keyboard player/singer do not a band make. They really did not impress me and then playing the last piano refrain from Faith No More's Epic hammered the last nail in the coffin home. While waiting for the Deludes I met a bunch of guys from the RAF who were over here training at the air force base. After many a comment about fish and chips, English beer, Heinz baked beans and real bacon we got talking about the election coming up. I missed the whole of the Deludes show due to the conversations and observations that ensued but it was more than pleasant to hear about home and get a different view that what we are fed on the television. BTW the Deludes really sounded like White Stripe but made good background music.

Feeling slightly home sick I left the English lads, finding a spot at the back of the club to listen to Longview, a band that I hoped would make me remember those years when the Indie music scene in England was amazing. The band originates from Manchester, England where so many good bands have originated from so they had a lot to live up to. They played a good show. I had only heard one song of theirs that KFMA keeps playing on the radio but I left slightly disappointed in their lack of selection. Most songs were slow, melodic numbers, great to listen to in the car or sat on the sofa but not really something to get a club crowd excited. The one song that has been played on the radio 'When you sleep', a little more up tempo, came across absolutely amazing live and the crowd showed their appreciation. The start of that song just filled the club with an amazing rush of sound, their harmonies were spot on and you could just feel the hairs on the back of your neck lift as the heavier guitar and drum ladened song washed over and through the crowd.

I left soon after they had finished their set. I completely missed Music Video who appearance wise looked like Green Day some 10 years ago, but I had been stood for 5 hours and a comfy chair was calling. I drove home happy, my ears still ringing. I had proved to myself that I could still go out alone and have a good time, meet interesting people, interact and interject in conversations. Now all I have to do is work myself up to be able to do it all over again.

Happy Fuckit Weekend y'all
