My god, man. Biggest literary bawlfest of my childhood was Sounder, which is like Old Yeller but less chipper. So I know what you mean.

benji reminded me too much of my uncle's unpleasant dog. But the time in Little House On The Prairie (the book) when they thought that Jack, their bulldog, had died was I think the first time I dealt with loss in literature. I remember yelling "it's not fair" and throwing the book across the room with tears streaming down my face. My parents asked me what was wrong, but I was too embarrassed to tell them. And then Jack ends up not dying.
I, however, remained a pansy.
