Lord Cutler Beckett: A Character Study

Today I paid a whopping 10 Euro to see DMC for the fifth time. Everyone always mentions how they bring notebooks to the theater, but I've never done it before - however, I brought one today, and it came in very handy! (Although I couldn't read some of my writing later on ( Read more... )

That is absolutely fantastic. You really seem to understand the character! Nicely done! I have a lot more insight now, I think.

ok i only managed to read the start of all of that, but it reminded me of what Empire magazine wrote, the POTC triology is pretty much like starwards....Beckett is the Darth Vader and the pirates are the Jedi....Beckett is using the pirates and the pirate's friends to try and get rid of each other, he's manipulating them to destroy each other. He almost did that as well, he had Jack, Will and Norrington fighting against each other at the end...all because each one of htem saw a use for the heart and didnt care if the other lived or died.
if that makes any sense..hmm

This is really interesting and very well done - it's clear that you put a lot of thought into this analysis.

I found Beckett making the crossing from ship to land on horseback extremely striking. Not only is he an exceptional equestrain, he must also own a very exceptional horse - clearly, he's very good at controlling horses as well as men to get what he wants.

Finally, I wanted to ask your opinion, since you've done some much contemplation writing this. How do you think Norrington comes into the picture? He shows up at the end with Davy Jones's heart - rather than the compass that Beckett wants. But, my question to you is, at what point did he engage Norrington's services? Did Beckett promise something to Norrington, or do you think Norrington is completely free-lance and simply used his own initiative to try to impress Beckett, hoping to win a reward (like the reinstatement of his commission)?

*ponders a few minutes*

I think Norrington returned to Beckett simply to try to gain his good-will, and thereby have his life back, etc. I don't think there was a previous agreement or anything like that. When Norrington sees that Jack has put the heart in the jar of dirt, the look on his face isn't a sneaky one, as if he'd been planning it all along, or "Oh, I've got it now!" It's an expression of surprise, and realization and hope of what it could bring him.

Just my thought. :)

Okay, I'll agree with all this.

But, I was wondering if maybe Norrington knew that Beckett wanted Jack's compass - that maybe Beckett had, at some point, hinted to Norrington that he would be well rewarded for getting the compass (much in the same way he told Will that he would earn Elizabeth's freedom by getting the compass). So, I'm wondering if that could have been at least part of Norrington's inspiration to infiltrate Jack's crew. But, having done so and, not having been able to get his hands on the compass, he comes across the opportunity to steal the heart and does so with the hope that Beckett will realize that it's far more valuable than the compass.

So, did Beckett "commission" Norrington to get the compass and Norrington brought him the heart instead; or does Norrington know nothing of Beckett's desire for the compass and merely brought him the heart in hopes of a reward?

Hmm, I think it could go either way... but I'm still pretty sure that Norrington didn't know Beckett wanted the compass, and just brought him the heart for a reward and to gain what was promised in the letters.

I guess we'll discover more in AWE!
