Question about POTC2

Hey ho Yo ho! Just had a quick question about the second film. When Norrington signs on to Jack's crew, how long does he claim to have been chasing after Jack? Also, if you can recall, because I can't, why/when did he give up his commission to keep chasing after Jack (I guess, at what point did it turn from assignment into obsession)?
