Age: 17
Gender: bishounen Male
Species: Human, sub-species Quincy
Appearance:
1,
2 Personality:
The word "smart-ass" is usually associated with his name-- Uryuu is very intelligent and analytical, and sometimes even takes pleasure with rubbing it in other's faces, most especially his "rival" Kurosaki Ichigo. He doesn't really care is others are put off with his attitude. For him, he has earned the right to brag, because he is indeed occupying the top spot in his whole batch. And bragging for him means a bit of name-calling, a bit of harmless, snarky banter and usually a lot of loud arguing, made as dramatic as only he can do it. Because he can. And he's just special like that.
Underneath all this though, he is actually shy and quiet, and hides this by acting cool, calm, collected-- with a bit of spastic on the side, but that’s usually reserved for special occasions. He also follows the moral code of his heritage, the Pride of the Quincy, coming off as polite to his peers, having a strong sense of justice, and the urge to defend what he has, whether his friends or his new-endangered clan. But there is one thing he absolutely refuses to do, and that is to kill, and simply prefers to incapacitate an opponent, no matter how badly the said enemy has offended him.
There are other things that set him off, such as buttons (which is regarded as unusual, seeing as his favorite hobby is sewing), being interrupted in the middle of a speech, having his schedule interrupted. Uryuu is organized, practical and very, very neat. If something should happen to disrupt this, be assured that he will become very, very angry, and he shows his displeasure in a very long, occasionally loud rant. But that’s simply the tip of the iceburg-- you’ll know when you have to run if he rants in a soft, calm tone that really doesn’t match his expression.
But his biggest berserk button is his father, Ryuuken, who had once said that there was no future in being a Quincy (no profit, to be exact) and protecting those who are already dead. He had taken offense to this, and lost some respect for the man, going so far as calling him "Ryuuken", which is considered extremely rude in Japanese conduct. Ishida Ryuuken is still his father though, and there are a few things left just for him. It's something no amount of hate and/or time can get rid of.
Uryuu has a unique sense of style whether he wears customized Quincy garb, or just casual clothing. Some of his shirts that previously had buttons were self-modified to bear zippers, and, all of his garments in fact, hidden Quincy crosses. His blue and white Quincy clothing is slightly different from the traditional garb, as he had once commented as a child that it was "lame". He likes being different, even from those of his own family and lineage.
Strengths/Abilities:
Reishi (spiritual particles) Manipulation and Absorption: He can collect the particles in the atmosphere and use them as fuel for his bows and various other weapons.
Hirenkyaku: A technique which allows him to travel short distances in extremely high speeds by concentrating reiatsu under her feet.
Ginrei Kojaku ("Lone Sparrow on a Silver Cliff"): His most recent bow, with which he claims he can fire 1,200 arrows consecutively.
Ransotengai: An ancient Quincy ability that allows him to move any paralyzed or otherwise immobile part of his body like a puppet, making him able to fight until his body is literally dust.
Seele Schneider: The bladed weapon that can also double as an arrow.
Silver Tube Techniques:
Haizen:He can create a beam of energy that can slice through an enemy.
Gritz: He is able to create a pentagram that surrounds his target like a light prison.
Wolke: He can use one of the tubes to make an explosion.
Sprenger: The last and most complicated of the silver tube techniques, he can create a pentagram seal with Seele Schneiders as its points, and make it explode by pouring the liquid inside a tube over one of the blades.
Aside from all these, he is resourceful and tactical, making full use of his brilliant mind, and can think up of several ways how to win a battle. Uryuu is also multilingual, which will work in his favor in foreign places, having a decent knowledge of Spanish and German.
Sewing can also be called a strength of his, as he is the captain of the handicrafts club in her school, believe it or not.
Weaknesses:
He has hypotension, or in layman's terms, low blood pressure, meaning he is extremely grumpy in the mornings and may snap at anyone close to him upon waking, and is prone to fainting spells if he pushes himself too far, whether physically, mentally or even emotionally. This irritates him to no end, especially if these symptoms come at inopportune times (which has not yet happened in battles, thankfully), but this doesn't stop him from "spazzing out" at very rare, very unexpected moments.
Also, he is not as strong physically as he would like to be, having placed most of training into wielding his Quincy bow, and making him weak against strong physical attacks. He may be an excellent example of a Quincy, but as most of his power is concentrated in her arms, he is not too athletic, and has to rely on Quincy techniques, further using up what reiatsu he has. Yes, he can collect more from the atmosphere, but even this method has its limitations, and can only be used when he is concentrating, or is fully aware of what he is doing, and the surroundings can only give so much.
History:
Despite his father's vehement disapproval, Uryuu trains under his grandfather in the ways of the Quincy. He shows a knack for it, and has the talent to push forward. However, one day, Souken is killed by a group of Hollows, and that implants something in his young, impressionable mind-- true fear. The experience teaches him that nothing in the world is as well as he had thought, and since then has harbored a genuine hate for the shinigami, and is determined to show them the true power of the Quincy, in any way possible.
As a teenager, Uryuu meets and confronts Kurosaki Ichigo, a subsitute shinigami given powers by a shinigami named Kuchiki Rukia, and challenges him to a game wherein one must kill more Hollows than the other within a day's time limit in order to win. He uses a special bait to call in Hollows, but his 'game' does not go according to plan when he also attracts a Menos Grande, or a giant Hollow composed of several minor Hollows. Thus, he and Kurosaki try to work together to defeat it, but Kurosaki is the only who actually had done something useful. He hates herself for being that weak, and vows to become stronger, and not be left behind.
Little time goes by when he and Kurosaki, along with Inoue Orihime and Sado "Chad" Yasutora, have to work together again, this time to save Rukia from execution, as she had been taken away by her brother Kuchiki Byakuya, captain of the sixth shinigami division, and her childhood friend and Byakuya's lieutenant, Abarai Renji, for breaking the shinigami's laws and transferring her powers over to Kurosaki. They are separated when they enter Seireitei, leaving Uryuu and Inoue working as a pair to find Kuchiki's whereabouts while hiding from the shinigami squads. Shortly after, they come across a shinigami, but easily defeat him. Their more dangerous encounter though is with the captain of the twelfth division and chief of the science department, Kurotsuchi Mayuri, and his lieutenant and artificial daughter, Nemu.
Uryuu orders Inoue to run, as Inoue's gifts are more for defense and healing and are therefore not much use in this battle, and proceeds to fight Kurotsuchi himself. He becomes badly wounded and is unable to move, thanks to the special ability of Kurotsuchi's zanpakuto. As an insult to injury, the shinigami narrates to him what he had done over the years to the Quincy souls he had managed to collect over the years. The final straw was the showing of the photgraph of Uryuu's grandfather, broken, bloody, and almost unrecognizable. Uryuu begins to have irrational anger he has never experienced before, and that is what motivates him to get up and fight again. He utilizes all the techniques he knew at that point, even going so far as removing the Sanrei glove, the item he had worn to help his reishi-gathering ability. With this, he gains the power he needs to be able to defeat Kurotsuchi. He loses his Quincy powers in the process, but is convinced he had managed to avenge all the souls the shinigami had tortured. Almost immediately after this, he is captured by another shinigami captain, Tousen Kaname, and is placed in prison with Sado and Shiba Ganju, a man who had insisted to follow them into the shinigami territory, to wait for the others to be captured as well.
They are then released by Inoue, assisted by the captain Zaraki Kenpachi, and four of his underlings. Together they eventually arrive at Rukia's execution located at Sokyoku Hill, where Ichigo is currently engaging Kuchiki Byakuya in a battle. Before the fight escalates to dangerous levels, plans are revealed by some of the captains who had found this whole business of execution over Rukia's simple misconduct, and had carried out their own investigations. Aizen Sousuke steps forward, and carries out his plans, assisted by fellow conspirators Tousen Kaname and Ichimaru Gin. He takes the Hogyoku or Orb of Illusion from Rukia's body (the mysterious shopkeeper Urahara having hidden it in her at an unknown time), and escapes with the help of ten Gillian. They take him and the other two to Hueco Mundo, the world of Hollows, and there he begins to create his army of Arrancar, or Hollows that have broken their masks in favor of gaining more power, in preparation to take Seireitei over.
With this turn of events, Rukia is cleared of the false charges, and the humans are sent back home-- without her, as she had stated that she needed to stay and regain the power the Hogyoku had taken from her body. Life goes on though, with or without her. Uryuu is then to fend for himself, powerless, as he refuses to reveal his new state to the others, making him an easy target for two incomplete Arrancar who come into the human world. He manages to hold them off, but only until his supply of Quincy equipment runs out, leaving him to be saved by his father. Ryuuken offers to restore his powers, which he's not so quick to bite, as there's a condition, and that is to never associate with the shinigami ever again. After long consideration, he agrees, and trains underneath Ryuuken's hospital. When he is ready to drop, dead tired, he is shot near the heart, giving him a scar on the chest reminiscent of the Quincy cross, and, of course, his powers back. The rest of his training is then dedicated to re-mastering these, as they have grown more powerful than before.
While training though, there had been two more invasions, both times by some of the Espada, Aizen's elite ten. Shortly after the third, Inoue disappears, and is suspected to be behind enemy lines. Urahara takes it upon himself to call Uryuu and relate to him what has happened, and reveal that Kurosaki and Sado are planning to enter Hueco Mundo to save him. Here he cuts his training short, and runs away with several Quincy equipment Ryuuken had locked away. This decision is questioned a little later on by Sado, as he had heard of his agreement with his father, but his reasoning is that there is a loophole, Kurosaki not being a full-fledged shinigami, and he was doing this for Inoue only.
Once inside Hueco Mundo, they come across a trio of goofy Hollows, the smallest (and possibly youngest) seemingly connected to the Arrancar with her face revealed, and her mask upon her head, unlike the other two. Her name is Nel Tu, and is reluctant at first to associate with them, but eventually agrees to lead them to Las Noches, the large structure where Aizen and his Arrancar reside. Almost immediately after this meeting, they are joined by Rukia, and Abarai Renji, who claim they had been sent on by Byakuya himself. Together they invade Las Noches, but are forced to split almost immediately.
Uryuu comes across an Arrancar, Cirucci Thunderwitch, and engages her in battle. He is later assisted by Pesche, one of Nel's two "brothers", who is actually quite useful with his technique "Infinite Slick" when not running his mouth. Here Uryuu reveals one of the weapons he had taken from Ryuuken, the Seele Schneider, the only Quincy weapon to take the form of a blade. He successfully defeats Cirucci by shooting her in the Saketsu, one of the areas of the body where reiatsu, or spiritual pressure, originates. He doesn't seem quite happy with this win though, and leaves almost immediately.
Later, he finds Abarai in trouble against an Espada, the Eighth, Szayel Aporro Grantz. They team up, and use their best techniques to fight, but even together, they're no match for the Espada and her ability to create voodoo dolls and destroy their internal organs. They are lucky (or unlucky), as Kurotsuchi Mayuri arrives and defeats the Arrancar flashily yet effortlessly. Kurotsuchi, assisted by Nemu, grudgingly heal them, stating that Seireitei had sent four captains after them to provide assistance, himself included, while the others prepare in Karakura town for Aizen's last invasion. He reveals that they have switched the town with a fake, the real Karakura in Soul Society, bound in place by four pillars.
As soon as he is well enough, he races back into the dome of Las Noches to come across Kurosaki fighting Ulquiorra Schiffer, the Fourth, and the one responsible for bringing Inoue to Hueco Mundo in the first place. The battle is being interrupted by two female Arrancar who dearly would dearly love to kill Inoue, and are then stopped by a third Arrancar, Espada number ten, Yammy. Uryuu however defeats Yammy, and places himself as Inoue's guard as Kurosaki and Ulquiorra fight. The battle is not over yet though, both inside and outside Hueco Mundo...
Canon Point: chapter 344, after defeating Yammy
First Person Sample:
[The frown he has becomes more and more pronounced the longer he watches the recorded message, until, at the very end of it, it becomes a full-fledged scowl-- something that the Quincy hardly ever shows. Thankfully no one's in the room to see it.
And then he proceeds to waste his breath to no one and nothing in particular.]
I have nothing to do with this. You, my dear Mayor, speak as if I am an important guest of sorts-- ha, as if it were true-- and greet me as such. Give me items, a basket, a bike what am I to do with a bike?, and even what I believe is a communications device. And what is that shirt? I have never seen such an atrocity in my life.
I am not believing that. For all I know this could be a ploy, a trick, something.
Wonderful day indeed.
[If Uryuu were the type to scream and rage to high heaven, he would be doing so right now. But he's not, and instead he's breathing, trying to keep his blood pressure down because damn, he can feel a bit of dizziness already.]
If this is not real, then it must be a very, very good representation of what is real. Or it may be happening in my own head. It could always be possible. [He sits down on a chair, chin propped on his hands.]
I need to leave as soon as possible, that is for sure. If I had arrived here from Hueco Mundo, surely there’s a way to return to it as well. I just need to find it. There just should not be any time wasted.
[Uryuu shoots a look at the device nearby.] If I have that, it means there are others like myself here. [Worth a shot.]
Third Person Sample:
This was, to say the least, unsettling.
He ran. The reiatsu following him was strong-- so strong that, even if he still had his powers, he was not sure if he did have a chance of defeating that strange, new Hollow that hounded him relentlessly. And now, as he turned to attempt to fight it, he wished he still had them. If he was to die here, the very least he could do was give the monster a good fight- and drag it to hell with him.
Wait, not it- them. There were two of the things. Two of the dangerous monsters that were after him- and he did not even notice. He had been to busy running to even try to sense that they were two separate beings. That was a mistake- his first in this fight, and may very well be his last. Needless to say, he was going to die.
Then... both were shot down by Ryuuken. He watched the man he didn't call father anymore, eyed the bow in his hands, and envied how the man carried still himself for someone who had cut off all ties to the Quincy so long ago. Now that was an archer, and he felt very, very angry at himself. Why could he not be like that? Why could he have not kept his powers? And why was he so envious of the very man he hated?
Uryuu, stop that. It's unbecoming, he told himself. He forced himself to stand, and look the man in the eye, ready for any verbal assault Ryuuken would think of throwing at him.
But instead Ryuuken offered to return his powers. It shocked him so much he nearly rocked visibly. Why would this man want to return his son's powers when he had been the one who disapproved of Uryuu's decision to train as a Quincy? When he was the one tohave thrown away his heritage for money? When he riduculed his own father and teacher for not being able to let go of something that was sure to die out in the near future? He did not understand at all.
Or perhaps... he was just not meant to understand. He never knew what was going on in Ryuuken's mind, after all, and he shouldn't attempt to do so now.
Part of him wanted to accept now, but another, prideful part of him told him to stop, think, and wait. If he accepted now, he would be able to have his powers restored immediately, just like that, and not have to worry another day about dying so easily at the hands of those Hollows, but then he would seem too desperate.
In fact, accepting at all would make him indebted to Ryuuken, and he absolutely did not want that.
There was only one thing to do in this situation, really.
"I will give you my reply later," he said simply, turning his back on the older man.
He needed to become stronger, he knew that much. Stop becoming so weak. Stop relying on others. Do it himself. He needed to keep that in mind.
The only question that remained was how.
Did you read the rules? Yes’m.
