Hi all,
Merry Christmas! Happy Chanukah! Feliz Navidad! Mazel Tov! Whatever...
Anyway, on Friday night, I went to see King Kong, which was just great. And so I figured, why not go see another movie on Christmas eve? After all, my boyfriend is back with his family in Los Angeles, and here I am in New York writing slash and polishing up my menorah. So I decided to see Brokeback Mountain.
Now I must admit I had reservations about seeing a movie about two closeted ranch hands who wear cowboy hats and live in the Midwest... after all, I generally hate "gay-themed movies," Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire notwithstanding. But this was directed by Ang Lee, who is amazing, and starred two really cute actors, so I had to go see it.
Two and a half hours later, I left the theater upset. VERY UPSET. And it's not that the film was a comedy or a tragedy per se, but that it was so real that it almost hurt to watch it. In some sense it left me with a disturbing raw feeling which was reminiscent of films like The Ice Storm.
Anyway, I highly recommend that you all go out and see Brokeback Mountain, though please take my advice and wait until after Christmas Day is over.
P.S. - For those of you who will not be able to see the film, I highly recommend that you read the
short story that Brokebeck Mountain is based upon. However, if you are planning to see the film, then it probably makes sense to wait and read the story after you see the film, so that the story does not give the film away.
