I was bored today, and was itching to cook something, anything, but there was (again) nothing much in the house. I'm going to have to get used to this I guess -- like I've mentioned before, my mother used to have a mania for keeping the fridge and dry stores full at all times. Recently it seems like we have a chronic dearth of supplies and I'll have to buy stuff myself if I wish to cook.
So anyway, since there were such limited items available (even the condiments were out!!) and I couldn't think of any recipe that included what I could find, I decided to improvise.
I found:
-- about 1/3 of a cabbage
-- 3 medium-sized onions, the red variety
-- about 1/2 a cauliflower
-- some bacon
-- butter
What I found but didn't find useful: Garlic, eggs, ginger, garlic salt, black pepper, a cold ham sandwich, grated cheese.
So... I proceeded to whack them together (quite haphazardly), bracing for a disaster. I'm not going to detail things like pre-heating the oven or washing the vegetables, those are just common sense:
1. Cut the onions into quarters (the smallest into halves) and soak them in water to reduce their pungent smell
2. Cut the cauliflower into bite size pieces
3. Tear the cabbage into pieces that won't be likely to cause eating problems if handled only with one fork
4. Lay the onions and cauliflower into a foil baking tray and scatter on some scraped butter
5. Cover with a layer of foil and bake for about 15min
6. Remove from oven and lay cabbage on top
7. Lay the bacon on top of everything else
8. Re-cover with foil and bake for about 20-25min
It turned out surprisingly well! Everything was moist and lightly salted by the bacon, which was well-cooked but not dry. The cabbage was nicely cooked, while the cauliflower and onions were thoroughly softened. My dad liked it and if I hadn't stopped him he would have polished off the lot -- and then how would I have had any left for Elessar to try? Haha!
Tonight we'll be meeting for a while to chill out. I'll let him try it... it'll be cold by then though. Oh well!
