I had a narrow window of opportunity this morning, and grabbed the chance to do a very gentle run. Turned out as a lovely 63 minute 7.2 mile tour round Trumpington, Grantchester, Haslingfield and Hauxton. I was deliberately pacing myself slow enough to be breathing calmly, so 8m45s miles are about right. The aim was to feel entirely untired at the end, and I think I managed it.

It was a lovely run; cool and pleasant for the first 3/4, and raining (but very nice to run in) for the remaining.

The bridleway between Haslingfield and Hauxton goes through a slight dip in the landscape, and half-way across, if it hadn't been for Biggles practicing his aerobatics, there would have been only a few clues of modern life.

And, half-way across, I turned a corner past a copse to meet a strange and hugely cheerful bloke riding a pony-and-trap the other way. It felt like one of those moments where (in the right kind of novel) this becomes a signifier of the point at which one has slipped into a parallel universe.

Back in Hauxton, and normality - the huge agrochemicals factory has been closed and is being demolished, and a Muntjac deer lay dead just by the footpath.
