1644 At Lyme, a surprise attack on the natural harbour (the Cobb) using incendiaries almost disabled the town.
1645 On arrival at Market Drayton, the King heard that the siege on Warrington had been lifted. This later turned out not to be entirely true.

1642 Parliament (who had been arming frantically) told the King how shocked they were by his formation of a Lifeguard. They said he should rely on the laws and affections of his people and not the swords of his soldiers.
1643 In her absence, the commons impeached the Queen for High Treason against Parliament (not a real crime, since high treason can only be against the crown) fo bringing weapons into the country for the King's cause.
1644 Again, the besiegers of Lathom House called upon the Countess of Derby to surrender to their mercy. She replied, "The mercies of the wicked are cruel."
1645 Fairfax finally had a promise of £10,000 in wages for the New Model Army if "he do but send a convoy to Windsor to collect it next Tuesday."
