adopt: throwing at the wall

After my whole 'why am I not doing the thing' post, I started to think a little about the adoptables stuff again and I figure I could do little art of that and it would also double for merch assets. But now that I'm sitting down about it I'm thinking 'what do I even make.'

Years ago when I first attempted to dip my toes into these, I was going to do these elemental dragons, they were really basic. The other thing I really wanted to work on was my 'gemhorn dragons' at the time but that's a whole other endeavor that is not simple. I could certainly bring back the Metcele and Saiprym, moreso the former than the latter. Then I remembered I wanted to make firebirds in different colors of fire and yea, I could do that.

For those maybe unaware of the Adoptable culture back in the day, that's how it used to be run. The host of the dragon species would have a clutch of eggs, people would email with an application (as many were RP-based there was a certain requirements such as having a character to impress on the dragon with) and those that met the requirements would be hand-picked and be awarded with one of the eggs. It was required to have a website in order to participate, as the dragons would be displayed on those sites and the species host would have a directory of the people that adopted those dragons. Those people then took those appropriate dragon images and put them on their website with a name and little blurbs. Sometimes it would be part of a larger RP but not always. It was also typical for you to be emailed the correct file for each growth stage. For fun, you can even find my original adoption site collection distilled in it's 2003 format, here.

I don't want to do something too focus intensive on my part. Whatever I do has to be simple and something I could give little pokemon-like breeding options to. If I think too much about genetics and dominant/recessive genes I'll just make an awful lot of work for myself that I have no business in trying to keep track of. I mean that's how it used to be, rarity and color types were always the same no matter the parents, heck not all adoption types even let you breed your critters. The idea is most of the 'eggs' will come from me in the first place. If I feel I can handle it I may open up 'breeding' requests from players and their own dragons but the distribution of those adoptions would all still come from my side of things.

Speaking of color rarities, an associate of mine coded this little script:
http://armaina.com/raffle.html
Left field I put in the different colors and their rarity rate (1 being most rare, increasing numbers being less rare) and then I put in the amount of eggs in the clutch. It then takes my variables and spits out a selection from my list matching those probabilities. This means I can use it to get consistent rarities for clutches that I have. Saves me the hassle of manually attempting to decide if I'd added too much or too little of a thing when I draft what colors are in the clutch.

Anywho that covers the concept I just gotta thing of cute dragons/critters I will enjoy drawing and may make good stickers or something. Two birds one stone and all that.
