It has been said that fat people are the last group of people is it ok to discriminate against. Are these people reading articles in major newspapers and magazines? I find a lot of general not only dislike but hatred of children. They are not only referred to as "it" by such haters (as in shut "it" up) but yesterday I read a letter to the editor in Salon.com in which a fellow citizen referred to children as crotch fruit. Would you be able to make such scathing and nasty remarks about gay people or fat people???
Current Example of children Bashing:
Where: New York Times, Motherlode Blog, "Should Strollers Be Banned", Feb. 10, 2011
The title is a bit misleading because it is not talking about a general overall banning of strollers but rather should strollers be banned on public transportation. This is inspired by a case in Halifax that a couple was not allowed on a bus with their twins in a stroller because it was too big. NY city demands that you fold up your stroller and therefore carry child on lap or put in a seat.
Again the letters in response to this article are filled with a general dislike of children and all they entail--such as strollers--and reveal to me a society that is not child friendly much less family centered. Again you get the few freaks that openly question why breeders insist on having children when they are only bringing about the demise of our planet faster out of their selfishness but you also get people who, in general, are not against you choosing to have children, but just don't want to deal with any of it in public.
I myself am not a big fan of strollers. They are bulky and a hassle. When we went to Disneyworld at the beginning of the month we didn't use a stroller once. We brought our backpack baby carrier. But we saw many people with at least two kids over the age of 2 and if you have more than one a backpack carrier is a little more of a stretch. Also if you are going to be out for awhile you need access to diapers, wipes, a change of clothes, maybe a toy or two, maybe some snacks, etc. If you are carrying a kids on your back how are you also supposed to carry a backpack or diaper bag? What if you have health problems and you can't carry a 20 lb. (or bigger) on your back. Jay and Ellyn and Harry had to carry Una most of the time because I am 8 mos. pregnant.
I understand it is a hassle to walk around a stroller on the bus--but would you insist a person in a wheelchair fold it up? no, we made an area for wheelchaired citizens. So a mother alone shopping is supposed to fold up her stroller and hold onto a stroller, a bag (or more), and a kid (or two).
