They're both liars.
She lies when she says she's used to not touching, that she's forgotten what it feels like, that she doesn't think about it much any more. She lies when she tells him that she's content with the few fleeting seconds of contact they allow themselves to savour. She lies when she says that they need to be extra careful so that she doesn't hurt him - the truth is that she needs to be careful for herself, to keep the taste of touch from making the hole inside her hungrier, wider, more bitter.
He lies when he says he doesn't care that he can't kiss her or hold her hand or caress her cheek. He lies when he tells her that he's not hurt when she pulls away and puts more distance between them. He lies when he says that taking a few risks now and then will be okay - the truth is that he's glad she says no, because sometimes he's not sure he can stop himself from holding on too long, trading life for the luxury of tasting her lips.
And they both lie when they reassure each other that they know they can make it, that they know that their relationship can last despite the insurmountable barrier between them. The truth is that believing their lies is the only way they can hold onto each other, and hold themselves together.
