Last Thursday, I stayed at the printers till nearly 2 in the morning to supervise the production of this issue. Looking at it now--and most especially hearing positive feedback from people who all say it looks imported!!!--makes me forget the kind of stress this job entails!
I initiated a series of changes to the look of the magazine, beginning this issue. Design-wise, I didn't add any new fonts, but I did make use of one existing typeface's bold type style (this made the magazine feel more friendly, democratic, and approachable). I also, as Lisa noticed and put it succinctly, "made the photos speak for themselves" by focusing on the beauty of the images and increasing the proportions between image size vs. white space. Other birthing pains included trying to manage colors and learning how to control brightness and saturation--whose implementation met some failure, but oh well.
That said, this isn't perfect, but at least all the learnings I gained from this "transition" issue (and incidentally, RL's 6th anniversary issue!) have been put to good use on the August issue (which I also can't wait to be published!).
For now, here's the July issue. Out on stands now! If you do grab a copy, I hope you enjoy it.
