Survivor

I just finished my first-ever local report--a story that required me to travel to Mindanao for three days during the last week of May.

"Scared" was an understatement when I first heard of Ces Drilon's capture. Reading the news articles sent shivers down my spine. And though I'm happy for her release, I know that the chances that her captors did nothing to her are slim.

Anyway, I exaggerate slightly. Really, I was quite a distance from Sulu and the southern hotspots, and I traveled together with World Vision, who reassured me that we weren't exactly walking into the lion's den. We traveled the Davao-Agusan route, in the northeastern region of Caraga. And yes, everything was quiet, provincial, and peaceful.

People at the office are now calling me "Arlene Drilon" (ano yun, Arlene De La Cruz + Ces Drilon?) for my so-called youthful courage. Haha. I know it's all in jest, and that the circumstances were just so coincidental. Between slaving away at the keyboard for two weeks on a reportage versus meeting the Abu Sayyaf, I'd take the former any time. Right now, I'm just feeling really, really, REALLY happy and relieved that I turned in a good piece this morning and that the red marks were very minimal.

Yes, it's wonderful to be a survivor.
