Character Information
Name: Arlen Lowell
Age: 31
Personality: Arlen is stubborn, headstrong, and bossy. He loses his temper often and throws hissy fits, rather than becoming violent. He shouts a lot when provoked, but gets along well with people when they give him space. Though Arlen is often put-off by other people, he is attractive and charismatic and uses it to get what he wants, and can be manipulative in some situations. Very good at winning people over, Arlen often is able to get more for his work than he probably should. He is hot-headed and can be difficult to deal with. Though he has the occasionally cranky disposition of a loner, he is actually a people person and does not like to be alone for long. Under all of his stubbornness and hot temper, he is a kind and compassionate person and he will go out of his way to help others even if it ends up costing him time, money, or his own physical wellbeing.
Though Arlen looks out for himself, he puts others’ safety before his own and in a dangerous situation he would probably jump in the way of a bullet if he had to, even for a stranger. He is a strong believer in the fact that it is every person’s duty to make sure that everything turns out as fairly as possible, and that everyone should look out for each other. Selfishness makes him ridiculously angry and he has no sympathy for people who value themselves above others. He tends to be very sarcastic and his sense of humor borders on inappropriate sometimes. Arlen likes to look for humor in the macabre and it makes him seem a little unsympathetic about death, though he actually isn’t. He has a tendency to misrepresent himself as kind of a jackass, but he doesn’t feel like it’s his problem if people get the wrong idea about him, and doesn’t usually bother to go out of his way to correct their assumptions. He is a fierce and loyal friend and makes it a point to never break a promise.
Arlen gets very fired up about certain subjects, and he is an avid debater. He will argue for hours about a subject if necessary (or if he feels it’s necessary. To him, necessary just means he still feels like arguing. He doesn’t care about changing other people’s opinions to mirror his own, he just feels the need to tirelessly drill his own opinion into others until he’s sure they won’t forget where he stands. He’s a very passionate and fiery person and when you get him going about something he’s not likely to stop. Some of the subjects that set him off are child abuse, religion, and the military. Thought he is sometimes a little hotheaded he’s got a good head on his shoulders and he does not tend to make overly stupid decisions unless it’s to help someone else. He acts much younger than he is occasionally, and he generally just likes to goof off and have fun. A very optimistic person, he will usually try to cheer others up by reminding them of the good in life. He can be kind of a cheeseball about certain things, though he is not generally a very romantic person, and even as an adult he’s a total mama’s boy.
Background: Arlen was born in Eden Valley, Minnesota to a Navy Seal and a police sketch artist. He had a tough-as-nails upbringing because both of his parents believe in the value of a hard day’s work. He and his younger sister, Henrietta, were rarely allowed to watch television. Instead, their mother taught them the basics of art, and Arlen fell in love with it at an early age, particularly charcoal drawings and photography, though his father pushed him to go into a medical career. He adamantly refused just because he didn’t want his father controlling his life, though later in life he spends a lot of time griping about how he should have become a doctor. Arlen is very close to his mother. His relationship with his father is awkward, but loving. They would do anything for each other.
Arlen has a typical “small town” attitude, having grown up in a town with population of 951. He played basketball all through high school, because a sports scholarship was the only way he could really afford to get away from home, which he wanted to do desperately. Arlen had spent his entire life believing that staying close to home was what was expected of him and, consequently, he decided to do just the opposite. He worked hard at basketball and his studies all through high school, hoping for a way out of Eden Valley. His grades were surprisingly good, despite how lazy he can be at times, due to his motivation.
After high school he took his full-ride scholarship to the University of Minnesota in Rochester, where he majored in business management with a bachelor’s in art history. During his final year of college, his childhood best friend’s younger sister, Lena, started attending U of M and she and Arlen began a casual relationship, beginning with him frequently helping her find her way around campus and escalating quickly from there. However, several months later when he learned she was pregnant he promptly proposed, believing it was the only option due to his father’s strong Catholic influence.
The couple relocated after college to Chicago, where they raised their daughter, Sam, together until she was five years old, when she drowned in the pool in the back yard while Arlen and Lena were having an argument. Arlen was devastated by the loss of his daughter and believed it was his own fault, and began a pattern of alcohol and drug abuse. During this time Arlen began to resent everyone and everything around him, particularly God. He believes that God could have done something to save his daughter, and he feels that religion is empty ad meaningless because it did nothing to prevent the horrible tragedy. He renounced his Catholic faith permanently and did little but sulk and drink for a long, painful period. Though he later went to rehab and has made an effort to remain clean since (with admitted falls off the wagon), the loss of their daughter as well as his closed-off and occasionally cruel behavior following it created a rift in he and Lena’s marriage, and gradually he began to feel trapped by it, wanting out of the marriage and wanting a life of his own. However, due to the fact that after standing up to a bully for Lena when she was five years old and promising that he would never ever make her cry like the mean boys did, he feels he cannot end things with his wife, who has become increasingly depressed, her emotions erratic.
Arlen spends as much time as he can out of the house, usually at friends’ houses or bars. He tries not to drink too much because he hates himself when he is drunk, but he does not always succeed. Though he has a generally cheerful outlook on life, he is still torn by his failing marriage and his daughter’s death; he feels like he never really got closure, or got to say goodbye. He is not, however, constantly dwelling on it and he enjoys looking to the future, when he can find a better time, a better feeling, and a better life. Long ago he took a vow to never give up on trying to improve himself and his life. Before he showed up in Aliunde, he was trying with little success to piece back his marriage and forgive himself for indirectly causing his daughter’s death. He does not yet really have a role in the city, having just randomly arrived there like so many have before him.
Appearance: he has short, light brown hair and gray eyes. He’s actually kind of vain, and he takes good care of his hair. He shaves his face every couple of days rather than every day, because he likes to have a certain amount of stubble there. Actually pretty medium in height, but he wishes he was tall. Arlen has a slight build, and he’s a little embarrassed about it because MANLY GUYS LIKE HIM don’t like to be scrawny. He works out and has some muscle on him, but nothing drastic.
Why do you want to app them into Aliunde? he’s a fighter, pure and simple. I think rather than taking the weird goings-on in Aliunde sitting down, he would go out and try to do something about it. I have a feeling he’d cause a lot of headache for everyone in charge, and he’d be constantly trying to come up with some sort of plot to gain some information or try to break out.

First Person: I need to get the dishes done, or they’re going to start piling up. I really don’t care, though. It’s not like dishes are the most important thing in the world. Especially not now. I’ve got a deadline for work… dammit, you know what? Screw that. I’m not doing anything today. [stubborn glare]
Third Person: With a low, heavy sigh Arlen closed the front door as quietly as he could, hoping against hope that somehow Lena would be asleep and he would not have to deal with either explaining his whereabouts or listening to one of her panic attacks about this or that. Since Sam’s death she had been increasingly impossible to deal with, and he did not feel like she was the woman he had married anymore. Arlen brushed a hand over his disheveled hair, momentarily feeling sorry for himself, and then dropped his bag beside the door, moving farther into the house. It was dark. Cautiously he poked his head into the living room, which looked empty.
“Lena?” he asked softly, just a courtesy check to see if she was sleeping on the couch before he flipped on the light. It illuminated the empty room and he wandered over to the sofa, sitting down hard and reaching for the remote. He turned on the television and started flipping channels but he did not actually pay any attention to what was happening on the screen, focusing instead on fiddling with the chain on the necklace around his neck. He had to pull it out of his suit jacket first. A paranoid glance to the side to make sure Lena was not there before he flopped his feet onto the coffee table, shoes and all.
“Ahhhh…” he sighed blissfully, enjoying the knowledge that he could do what he wanted. After several meetings with advertising executives that day, he was drained. Arlen hated dressing up with a burning passion so the fact that he was currently decked out in a suit and tie was nothing short of a miracle.
“Damn suit-wearing old people,” he growled, loosening his ridiculous paisley tie. “They’d better commission me good after this.”
