It seemed like a good idea. With the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall coming up, I thought I'd ask Berliners where they were on the night the first chunks came down. The answers were not what I expected.
Some said they just watched it on television, another guy said he knew it was going to be repeated all night, so he went to bed. The only interesting story came from a guy I met in Woof bar. He went out to see what was happening and went over to East Berlin. It was early next morning when he returned to his boyfriend, who wanted to know where he'd been and whose bed he'd slept in. They're no longer together.
So, what marked the beginning of reunification for Germany was, for one couple, the beginning of the end.
