Monumental Madness

This is the Spire of Dublin, a 390-foot piece of modern art that filled the gap in O'Connell Street  that was left after the IRA blew up Nelson's Column.  It's known the to locals as "the stiletto in the ghetto", following a tradition of giving rhyming titles to street monuments.

Elsewhere in the city, a statue of two ladies with their shopping became "the hags with the bags". Meanwhile the stylised representation of the River Liffey (Anna Livia) as a woman immersed in flowing water came to be known as "the floozie in the jacuzzi."

And as if to show that Dubliners have no respect for the even the most distinguished of citizens, the statue of James Joyce resting on his walking cane was given the less than salubrious title:
"the prick with the stick."
