"Syme" is pronounced "see me" and is a bilingual pun. He (or possibly they) has been tagging all over town for at least a year now. He also tagged The Hard Rain Project's outdoor art exhibit when it was on display in the varggrop (place for the turn table when there was a train station here and now a big hole in the ground) last summer. Syme's activities have been a source of much discussion here, not least of all on the local newspaper's website. While I don't agree with the tagging, I do understand some of the frustration behind it. During the past 2 years the local government has cut-back or eliminated pretty much everything geared towards young people. As I have pointed-out to pretty much anyone who will listen, there isn't a damn thing to do around here if you are too old to play with Barbie and too young to go to nightclubs. I read online today that the police have taken in their Syme suspect for questioning and, in the comments section 2 dorks have already expressed their desire to burn him at the stake. Dork #2 even wrote that he doesn't want to hear any whining about how there's nothing for young people to do here.
IMHO Syme is a classic example of "the devil finds mischief for idle hands." If there's nothing going on then people start looking around for stuff to do and sometimes that stuff is destructive. According to people in Hössna, once the local community group built a skate park along with some other things in their little village, they no longer had a problem with graffiti and vandalism! I think as much as anything because they showed that there are middle-aged adults who give a damn about kid's and teenager's quality of life!!!
I'm getting a bit sleepy and may topple off my soapbox at any moment so rant off for now. . . :-)
