I knew I'd missed some books (plus got to add the two I just finished).
38-39. Anne Bishop, books 1-2 of The World of the Fae series (The Pillars of the World [REREAD], Shadows and Light). Fantasy. 5 stars.
Bishop remains one of my all time favorite authors. While the fae series doesn't enthrall me as much as the Dark Jewels one did, it still has her intriguing style. Good characters and she makes good use of twisting real world history to a fantasy setting (inquisition, female repression, etc). I'm looking forward to getting the last book of the series once I get through the Hold Queue at the library for it.
40. Garth Nix, Lirael, book 2 of The Old Kingdom series. Fantasy. 4 stars.
This series can be a bit "jumpy" in timeline. Book one features an entirely different main character (who is a minor character in this book) with just one main POV. This one has multiple POVs, making it seem a little jarring at first, but the characters are mostly interesting. I dislike that the novel wasn't self contained like Sabriel was, but it settled enough issues to be a good lead in to the next book.
41. Jim Butcher, Storm Front, book 1 of the Dresden Files series. Modern horror fantasy. 4 stars.
I've had this series recommended many, many times, and thanks to the TV series on SciFi channel, had to wait forever to get my hands on one of the two copies the library has. Good reading and a nice change to have a male main character in one of these modern horror/fantasy series, and a character with plenty of personality quirks to make things interesting. Dresden reminds me strongly of Rachel Morgan from Kim Harrison's series, in being rather hapless and "learn as we go" type of character.
42. Patricia Briggs, Blood Bound, book 2 of the Mercy Thompson series. Modern horror fantasy. 4 stars.
I continue to enjoy Mercy as a main character, but am getting a bit miffed as she starts to assemble a harem of interested men. What the heck is up with female authors having to have a female lead character with 2-10 men drooling after her? Annoying, annoying, annoying. But I'll overlook it and keep reading as new ones come out just because Briggs has interesting spins on her paranormal life meets modern human world.
Currently reading: nada until library trip Saturday. Up next: Rachel Caine's Chill Factor, Jim Butcher's Fool Moon, Charlaine Harris' Definately Dead, and Simon Green's Something from the Nightside.
Any recommendations of authors/books?
