I saw a new family doctor on Friday because my physical therapy/chiro visits weren't helping my back spasms enough yet. My new doc is BF friendly (which I was worried about). She had x-rays done (and said to compliment my chiro for great work on adjustments) and then hesitated about any meds because the baby is only 2.5 months. She said if baby was 6+ months and okay with solids, there were lots she'd try - let me take something at night, then pump and dump first thing each morning but BF normally after that. (She feels the majority of muscle relaxers are too sedating for babies and not studied enough unless mom's in unbearable pain). But that said, she kept hunting through her drug database until she had an "ah-ha" moment.
I'd found Baclofen on the Kellymom misc med list as pregnancy safe and L2 for breastfeeding, but my online research indicated it was an IV type drug administered thorough a pump (like an insulin pump). My doc almost overlooked it for the same reason, as the notation that it had a pill form was hard to find.
She also wanted to avoid prescription pain pills because she said they'd only treat the pain, not the spasms, thus masking the issue and possibly letting them cause damage to my back.
So I got a prescription for 10mg of Baclofen to take 1/2 pill as needed at bedtime, with precautions to observe baby for any sedation effects. So far, not only has baby been okay with it, it hasn't even made ME that sleepy, but it does wonders for relaxing my back muscles so I can sleep.
I'm also to finish my physical therapy, continue my water aerobics 3 times a week, and take ibuprofen if needed for pain.
A regular type update later, I promise. ;-)
