Swallow me so the pain subsides...Now let the show begin...

Saturday was phenomenal. After getting three favorable votes from the three Army captains who interviewed me on my OCS board, I was accepted into the program. Saturday I signed my contract and got sworn in, and I'm slated to ship out June 8. Friday's Thursday league championship was bogus, as the secondary Mystery Meat team got hosed by the terrible officiating. The Saturday team made up for it though, trouncing Full Throttle 7-1 in the early game.

The championship was marked by the Undead (seeded #1 in the tournament) lobbying for their star player, Josh Mayes, to be allowed to play after being ejected by officials during their first game of the night. We didn't care either way; we knew we could beat them with or without their star forward. The game prior to ours was fun to watch. It was another league's championship game. The team that had a 5-1 lead had blown said lead and lost 6-5 in OT. It was to be an omen.

During that game, I handed Nick Scopel his jersey he had left at the rink a few weeks prior. I asked him if he had mine, left there the same night. Sure enough, he did. That was awesome, but not as awesome as what happened next...

Ethan Seeds scored shorthanded to open the contest between Mystery Meat (#2) and Undead (#1). The Meat led 1-0, then 2-1, then 4-2, then were tied at 4, 5, and 6. The vaunted "four horsemen" line of Binder, Van Horn, Davidson and Phillips was broken up due to several penalty kill situations early in the game, but on three consecutive rushes into the offensive zone, Ethan Seeds again led the rush with Van Horn and Phillips trailing and twice made onlookers gasp as the puck trickled ever-so-close both times. The third time would indeed be the charm. Seeds scored and ended the game, 7-6 in OT.

That would be Seeds' last game with the Mystery Meat for at least one more season. Matt Dixon and Bob Kinney (also not in uniform for the conclusion of this season) would also be missing the next season. It has been a true privilege to share the rink with not only such amazing players, but good men. I thank all of you who made this past season possible, to include our fans (mondo props to Clint, Jess, Josh, Ulabatah, Michelle, Rachael, the Hetterles and of course, my Sonya, the most beautiful sick person in the world!).

Boy it was fun, though...Nick Scopel, a volunteer firefighter, had his first fire the night prior to the games. He said he didn't know which was more exciting--the fire or the final game!

Until next time...
